Hello free peoples :)   I am looking for an aluminum step van to convert.  I found one I would love to buy but before finalizing anything I innocently checked with my insurance company and alas I have run into my first snag.  I would like to get rv insurance rather than commercial because of the price difference.  Can anyone direct me to an insurance broker who can make this happen?  I live in Michigan currently.  Any and all helpful information is much appreciated.

A guy I know in Michigan a few years back want to do they same thing and they told him he had to have a bathroom with .holding tanks not sure if that still that was just to get it registered as an RV I hope you find a solution

Welcome. Michigan's motorhome definition: 257.32a “Motor home” defined.
Sec. 32a. “Motor home” means a motor vehicle constructed or altered to provide living quarters, including
permanently installed cooking and sleeping facilities, and is used for recreation, camping, or other
noncommercial use

Welcome Eli to the CRVL forums! To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

I wanted to do the same here in Nevada and gave up. Some States it is very difficult to make a commercial vehicle into an RV. I found one insurance company online that would give me liability insurance only after it had been converted and re registered, but they refused to give me a price. So I though I am going to do a lot of work, and then maybe the insurance will be unreasonable.
Maybe ask around the bus build forums. https://vanlivingforum.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=7

I'm in Michigan & bought an ambulance last year. Wen't to the SOS told them it was a motor home & I had sleeping & cooking facilitys & got a MH plate & registration. Michigan tags go buy the orig cost so the ambulance was around $200k which had me concerned but tags are about $65. You shouldent have any trouble.
