Greetings to one & all from The ===> Great-White-Mule! Vintage citizen here, (63'), recent buyer & first time owner of a class "A" motor home being a; 1988' national RV built, 27' dolphin 2740. I'm restoring the unit towards being turn key worthy to travel the country. I've owned it since July of 2015'. This unit built upon a C3500 chassis, powered by a Chevy 454 generation (4) 7.4 liter, engine equipped with a Banks Power system and over all came equipped with 75% of all owner mfg. options offered at the time of it's original sale. Presently have power train & suspension fully functioning; passed California emissions; new tires all around including the spare; replaced all shocks plus steering damper, common sense maintenance to engine, transmission, rear end completed; fluids, fuel filters replaced, stuff like that! All the units appliances thus far good operations including unit levelers. * Just a few details here showing my present progress at roughly six months of ownership. Additionally; no house leaks, propane & plumbing pressure sound, and original Firestone rear axle equipped ride right system checks "OK " as well. ===> Nuff-Said about such.

I name most non-organic owned devices; color me eccentric! I've named this unit ===> TARDIS, ===> those whom are Dr. Who fans will SMILE at this.

But I digress...

An important question to all; " does anyone here own this exact unit being; a 1988' National Inc. mfg. Dolphin 2740??? * After six months of cyber sleuthing I've yet to either find another exact unit either for sale or presently owned by another. This unit appears to be the very first type "A" series National RV offered for sale. Prior they'd only offered type B & C units. Apparently I own a rare bird...

I welcome all feedback per topic at hand and offer any five cents worth of knowledge I may have towards the assistance to others...

I reside in the central coast of California; am a retired widower upon a life time pension who's goal is to restore the above mentioned RV to a reliable turn key condition to travel this country for a decade before my meat suit, ( my Sci-Fi reference to my body ), rots to a state where as I can no longer explore this nation per whims desire. THANKS for allowing me to join your community and good fortune to you & yours. Milk_White_Mule ===> OUT!

Greetings and welcome to CRVL   :)

Tom Baker vintage fan myself.  =)

Your "virtual" Tardis couldn't have found a better place for you.   The quality of information, ideas, and creativity abounds within this colony.  One that the Department would certainly consider a collection of Fallen Angels.

There have been rumors that Yssaringintinka herself resides among us keeping the Ukkan Library Card safe in her possession.  But the card's powers have an overreaching influence on the members here thus rendering the Colony a Library unto itself.

Jelly baby ?

Welcome to the CRVL forums, Mike! irv2 does have a seperate forum for National Dolphin motor homes. Perhaps, you've already checked it out. If not, here's the link: http://www.irv2.com/forums/f105/
Maybe someone there has info

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome aboard.

THANKS! ===> for the welcome Lj... My original, ( I've arrived here to the forum post ), was but a shot in the darkness towards perhaps locating another whom also owned the exact or VERY similar RV that I presently am chipping away at towards blast off from my present setting in San Luis Obispo County in California to places and faces yet unknown. I'm upon a self set time frame of a year and a half to get TARDIS, ( RV nick name ), as completely prepared as my currant skill sets allow to blast off from where I reside without need of any road side emergency services or bad operations from it other than common usage problems experienced by anyone attempting to maintain such a complicated beast of a machine against all the " X " factors coming at anyone attempting such a thing in life.

Forthwith from this post I'll scamper a muck though out this forum's varied content for many days and decide what may hold my interest and or apply to my present RV restorations... THANKS AGAIN ===> for your welcome. Milk_White_Mule ===> OUT!

THANKS Cyndi for your SPEEDY reply and reference link. Been there, as with many similar others coupled with months of general cyber searches ending in negative exact desired specific information results per others owning my specific RV manufactured model built in 1987-88'. As stated in my original forum posting as a Newbie here; " I apparently own a rare bird. " In fact per present knowledge chances are I may own the ONLY present running one; * Life often takes such odd & very interesting turns!

* It's also National RV's very first year it offered a class "A" line to the public as well! ** PLUS, in 6 months I've not found another of this make, year or model offered for sale either! Getting to be nearly ( Black Mirror eerie ), refer to NetFlix search of Black Mirror to make some sense of this...

Good Fortune o You & Yours! ===> Milk_White_Mule ===> OUT!

THANKS eDJ ===>( electronic disc jockey? )===>*just a sudden brain pondering!===> ANYWAYS; Vintage fan of vehicles, vintage Doctor Who? Just an earnest THINK on behalf of some of your wording here... Now comes; JELLY BABY? ===> Yeah that's just not presently in my slang jar to get at. * Perhaps being a vintage citizen at 63' has left me in the dust contemporary slang wise, or the pink cells in my skull aren't firing like they once did... Late night/early California morning Milk_White_Mule grateful for your or any future creative comments. Good Fortune To You & Yours.

Welcome aboard the CRVL forums..........or maybe thanks for bringing us aboard the Tardis... ;)
..It sounds like your ship came with a lot of nice mods already and you have got through most of the pre-flight checklist.
I never had an exact mate to your rig but most RVs have the same or similar systems so think you'll find plenty of answers on whatever is causing you to puzzle!
Just ask.

Greetings; " I am what I am & that's all that I am " rvpopeye ===> also " That's all I can stands & I can't stands no more! " ===> Popeye's a great guy to paraphrase!!! Yeah I got very fortunate finding TARDIS, or it found me, still not sure 'bout that yet! Working presently upon a fix for the stater solenoid hot start problem; purchased a SPENDY after market  race engine starter just this afternoon in a brave attempt at a fix; to be installed in three days; will also install a metal starter heat shield as well. I've given up finding another TARDIS owner; like in the Doctor Who series; think I've the only one left. ( Looked for over half a year ===> GeeZ! ) Stay tuned for progress reports; looking for good forum here to do just that. Milk_White_Mule ===> OUT!

I remember those hot start issues from back in the day.

It seemed that the explanation for it then was the residual heat from the motor block transferred into the metal
case housing the field coils causing a threshold of resistance the rest of the circuit (including solenoid) to overcome.  (or not)
I think the heat sink would help a lot and if I remember those were common back then.

Perhaps less spendy (expensive) and more primitive would be to carry a Co2 fire extinguisher along to give
the device a few seconds of blast to reduce the latient heat to a workable level.  I'm sure it could be rigged remotely (as with an Aircraft installation)

Not only may it resolve the issue,  but those who notice the fog issue from under Tardis will understand your choice of name for this particular RV.   Wouldn't they ?

Not if you were to dress as your favorite Doctor come Comic-com time in your area(s),  you may have
cult following in those events.

Hello and welcome!

THANKS for the welcome aboard SaltySeaWitch I'm grateful for warm efforts upon my behalf being a freshly landed newbie waddling a muck in these varied forums. Tardis;( being the nick name of my RV ), will have installed an off market racing starter in a couple of days in a hope it'll cure my nagging hot start problem stemming from her big block nova like heat generations which appears to frequently daze the starter. Just another small step before many others I certainly suppose before I'm finally cleared to blast off towards wondrous adventures upon varied shoe string roads out there where upon shinny faces and interesting places await for those whom dare to wander. In approx. two days an after market high performance starter very similar to a Mean Green Machine starter will be installed with profane groans via my school of the 1960's mechanic Don. He'll also attempt to install a metal heat shield over the new starter as well. Should be a pretty fun day, and, just perhaps Tardis won't reject our ongoing efforts on her behalf; one NEVER knows the ways truly of a Tardis! Next comes re-work of the house batteries up graded to REAL dual 6v marine deep cycle batteries wired in parallel ongoing fed by two roof mounted solar panels. Presently seeking the proper photo-voltic regulator to place properly in line with the up grade. Future holds a radiator flush and installation of a 16 psi shinny bright radiator cap. Yet ever more small steps to the eventual fade out of total Tardis energy engagement. Milk_White_Mule OUT!

You're gonna want to wire those 6 volters in series to get 12 volts.

I was at a fraternal lodge that I belong to last night. (I volunteer to work the kitchen and cook and help with the bar tending etc)  While there one of the old mechanic's I've known for some time was by for a drink and to relax with his mates for a bit.   I got a minute with him and spoke of Tardis and it's starter problems.

He remembered those issues well and spoke of installing many a heat shield.  Told me that the starters with the solenoid on top tended to have this problem.   There were all kinds of fixes he said including an aftermarket plunger spring with less resistance.  But the piston in the solenoid (as he described it) tended to be made of a metal that expanded quicker than the material of he solenoid housing, thus binding itself until it cooled.  This is why the heat shield was the best remedy in his opinion.

He went on to explain that a lot of specialty shops that dealt with this issue would actually rewire the "start" circuit wiring with a heaver gauge wire from the key switch to the "start pole" of the solenoid.

When the starter fails most people see it as an inconvenience,  but it is a safety issue as well should your engine
falter while in traffic.

Personally,  I've always had a preference for a manual choke equipped vehicle if the engine uses a carburetor.
(The driver has better control with that feature)

Hi and Welcome!! :)

THANKS for friendly HELLO ===> HOWDY; Theadyn...

Your Icon reminds me of glory high school days long past when your grass skit cutie danced mid center upon allot of real steel dash boards as the drivers burnt tire around local surface streets surrounding their local high schools, and, the bad lads from east L.A. used to sport a matched pair of chromed plastic organ pipes in each corner of their car's rear window flat decks; some organ pipe sets, ( the spendy fancy ones had speakers inside them too ). All such exclaimed sprung instantly from my moldy memory as I gazed at your  grass skirted dash dancer... A memory spark ignited from your warm welcome ===> THANKS! ===> Milk_White_Mule ===> OUT!
