San Diego to Illinois is basically Route 66, so if you do some googling you can probably find the classic stops. Lots of Americana and fiberglass.
Or you can divert north slightly and go through the major Utah national parks, Colorado, Kansas City (Arthur Bryant’s for bbq), St Louis, etc.
As for what to look out for, it’s mostly personal preference. If you’re going with an RV water damage is the big thing. Rust is another concern, a little is fine. Mileage, accidents, the typical stuff.
