My name is Gerry, I'm a 67 year young female ready to hit the road, but being held back as I am taking care of my 90 year old mother. I live in a suburb of Cleveland, OH and currently still have my house. Started this winter packing up and selling stuff and that has been very good for my soul. Motorcycling, photography and knitting are some of the activities I enjoy.

I retired from Supertrapp Ind. (manufactured exhausts for motorcycles and cars), tunable mufflers. I was in technical support, talking to boys about their toys all day! Also worked the booth at Sturgis and Daytona, crazy and fun.

I like my alone time but also enjoy the company of new and old friends. If you are in the area let me know and we can share a coffee.

I have a 2013 Ford Transit Connect, set up for full timing, bed, storage, porta potty, fridge, single stove for cooking via propane, microwave, sink with running water, 110 hook up and solar. I also have limo tint on the windows and reflectix for the windows. Ouch, no insulation! Although I run hot, kinda like Bob always looking for higher elevations.

I have been following CheapRVLiving for about 1.5 years and Bob has been an inspiration, his knowledge and technical support has been invaluable to me. I also follow other vandwelling blogs and enjoy reading about the experiences of all you folk.

This forum is going to be great, the information and the humor has me already. Look forward to spending time with all of you.

Hi Gerry, welcome to the forum!

I'm all too familiar with being held back by eldercare. Mom is turning 89 in a couple of months.

I'm breaking loose this coming fall...I'm being replaced with professional assistance. Right now it's with Mom's blessing but we may encounter some resistance when the time gets closer...we'll see! My brother and sister in law aren't exactly thrilled (that's a mild term for it... :D ) by the idea of me heading out...they'll get over it.

Hi onehugger, welcome, these forums are terrific, your van sounds like a super set up !

Welcome to the CRVL forums, Onehugger! I'm also taking care of my mom. I'll be back on the road in August, though. I can't wait. I'm sure someone has already mentioned that pictures are a must.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Looking forward to seeing you out there!

Welcome, Gerry!

It's great that you're so prepared! Hope to see you on the road soon.

I have been working as a Caregiver for more than two years, and I'm so happy your mom is giving you her blessing to break loose.

Well, I wouldn't say she's giving it her 'blessing'.

My breaking free came about because she got mad at me for pushing her to eat well and get exercise and practice good hygiene. She threatened to replace me with paid staff and I realized that it was the answer... :)

I love her but she belongs in assisted living and won't go.

Maybe with several of us all on here either looking after our own aging parents or working as a caregiver, we need a thread where we can hash out strategies (and maybe moan about it a bit too).

I'm currently in the same boat. My 85 yr old mom can still drive and goes to Sunday School, the senior center, and her hairdresser. But her memory is going, and she feels it is "too much trouble" to fix even a snack for her own dinner. On the other hand, she could live another 10 or 15 years (and I hope she does!), so I cannot stay with her and give up my own life. I'm working to get my niece and nephew on board for some help when I do a "trial" roadtrip in June. I'm hoping she'll see how lonely she gets by herself and also that she WANTS some help with things like laundry (so assisted living would be great).

Yea, there seems to be more than  a few of us in that boat.

I'm going to get a thread started where we can bounce this stuff off each other rather than messing up OneHuggers' welcome thread.
