New Remote FOB key $390

New key from a door lock for
98 Sienna  $105

New key for 06 Scion
With chip  $85

This stuf is gettin Xpensiv.

But to B Locked Out is an
InConvenience I can do without

If it is just a matter of the keys left in the vehicle, you don't need the expensive chip/fob keys to get in.  The door locks on most vehicles are mechanical and will work to unlock the door so you can get to your key that will start the vehicle.  Any good key shop can make you a door key for a few dollars.

I hide my door keys in a very inconvenient outside spot to get to so not easily found.  May take me 15 minutes to get to, but better than a tow truck with a slim jim :D

Yes .
I was down to only 1 working lock on my van.

The other 2 locks had no key.

It was in accident so had locks replaced.

Had to hav the smith make a key from
Existing lock for $ 105 .

Smart to hide the key some where.
Zip ties ? :)

My alarm will not allow the van to be started without the FOB, so in my case a spare key and FOB are stashed in a weather proof container. Lets say that it requires laying down on your back and sliding under to find it. Having a spare is essential, but do diligence is essential in hiding them.

Tucked under a fender or bumper is not the way.
Now with that said, I see the so cal surfers out here have a unique way of stashing there keys while surfing and that's a combination opened lock box attached to a tow hook. smart!

Get a Ford with a Keypad for entry. Best feature ever!

If you have power locks, find the unlock button wires, splice into them then run it to a random spot under the van. Touch them together to unlock, but to someone else it just looks like a broken wire under your van.

Having made these transponder keys for years as an Automotive Locksmith, the average chip key blank costs $7.00 ea. The rest is profit.

NEVER hide a transponder key outside the vehicle, always hide a metal service key (won't start ignition) and then hide the expensive transponder key INSIDE the vehicle.

If the magnetic box bounces off, and it will, you lose a $3.00 key vs. a $100.00 key. If someone finds it and opens the door, they can't drive away as the service key has no chip. If the service key is missing, the real key is still inside and any tow company, or a rock through a window, will open the door allowing access to the chip key.

Another tip for anyone whose fob quits working and a new battery doesn't fix it, there's a little metal flange inside that presses down on a connector when you push the buttons, sometimes these break off. $15 at a computer place to get them soldered back on instead of $285 for a new fob (Jeep GC price)

Well this key hiding doesn't work for some of us old farts.I hid a truck key somewhere a few years ago and I probably couldn't find it with a search warrant.

I carry a spare door key and a lock box key taped to a card in my wallet.  Since I always have my wallet with me and a spare fob in the lock box, its been a good backup plan for me.  Saved me a couple of times.

A friend got a new Nissan with the proximity key.  Very convenient.  The fob never leaves his pocket.

Bob you sound like my pop(rip). he hid keys to both of our ranch trucks. well I found the one on the newer truck, but still haven't found the one on the older truck. lol probably never will. highdesertranger

My last vehicle (I think it was a F100) that I needed a third key for and it had the chip thing.  I was able to buy a replacement key, have it cut and with the help of the owners manual program that replacement key.  It did not require a trip to the dealer as I had a working key to let me program an extra key.  May be worth checking the manual.

HDR, you'll find that key when you do a restoration on it ;)

I try never to lock my door when it is opened .

i'm thinking of gettin the FOB from amazon / ebay ~ $ 100
then having the dealer program for $ 180 tho they cant
guarantee it will work . .

everything from the dealer is ~ $ 440 ?

I keep a spare fob on my wallet, and my wallet goes with me everywhere. Inside I have the ignition key hidden near the front, I case I need a quick getaway and panic finding my purse with regular keys. Plus, a set in metal box hidden on the van. Hmm.. guess I should make sure it's still around and probably hide it better than it is, anyways.

Sad to admit, here around the house and driving around town, I rarely lock the doors. While traveling anywhere, I'm super anal about making sure I have it locked, regular set of keys and the fob on my wallet, and check it at least 3 times before shutting the door. OCD much?? lol

Checking 2 x isn't enough ?

Yeah some times I check 3 x also.

& Panda Monium pulls her RV over every hour or 2 to check
that her rig is safe.

My mom's Taurus will program a key but you need two working keys and then can use them, with the car, to program a third.

Yep. wIth both of my new Fords, I bought a third and did just that before I lost one. Oddly, we still have all three to both trucks, including the 2001 my son drives...
