Watching tv last night they had a story about some unclaimed cremains of vets in Amarillo.  A group called Missing in America got involved with a local undertaker whose son IS a Marine. Anyway they had a public ceremony with honors and a group of motorcycle riders are escorting the remains to San Antonio for burial in a national cemetery. You might google "Amarillo honors vets".  Great story!

I forgot to mention there were 5 sets of remains taken from Amarillo to San Antonio.

I read the article, uplifting and sad at the same time. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

That's happened in Seattle as well. It's astounding that cremains can sit on a shelf for that long let alone vets. I get it that ceremony is mostly for the living but it makes me question the wasted tax dollars.

The ceremony was done with mostly donated money and the Patriot Guards provided the escort.

Every Honorably Discharged Veteran is entitled to burial in a National Cemetary.

A few Urns of men's Remains sitting in a place of respect costs the taxpayer zip. Most honor Guards are Reservists and do it voluntarily.

The most the VA will kick in is $250.00.

What bothers me more is when a Police Officer dies and all the other departments send representatives on the dime of the tax payer.
Who else gets paid to attend a funeral?

Some see me as heartless, but many people die in their line of work, and people couldn't care less. Electrician is electrocuted, dummy screwed up, call the hall for a replacement. Next!

Probably fewer LEO are killed each year than a lot of other occupations.

My post about wasted tax dollars was regarding the tax money spent storing the unclaimed cremains which does cost the taxpayer. I'm sorry I worded it in a confusing manner and lumped that in with ceremony. This is why I wish I could edit. I usually end up editing my posts about 3 times before they read properly. /shrug
