Nowadays, I try to live by the motto, "I don't want to get more things done, I want to have less to do."

Eventually I want to live in a van, but that may be 10 years away, or maybe a little sooner, but I'm struggling with whether I should get back into a hobby for a few years.  It's actually a really cool hobby, I used to do it years ago.  I kept Poison Dart Frogs.  I had like 70 frogs/froglets/tadpoles at a time.

I'm struggling with minimizing my stuff vs. giving me more things I have to do vs. I know I'll have to give it up eventually.

There's not really a question here, just kind of wanted to get some thoughts out of my head.  I'll take any thoughts anyone may have...

Sometimes on-the-road hobbies aren't matter of minimalism. Sometimes it's about logistics and whether you can actually do it well under the conditions.

you just follow your heart and dreams. if keeping poison dart frogs makes you happy. then go for it. probably not the best hobby for a van dweller. but even you said that is years down the road. why force something. if you really want to be a van dweller. then at some point you have to choose, PDF's or van dweller, or you put up with the obstacles of keeping poison dart frogs on the road. i am sure it can be done.

you are the only one that can decide what will make you happy

What is so sacred about Minimalism, anyway? Minimalism is boring. The ultimate in Minimalism is to be dead.

Decision are made as to what is the minimum amount of items one needs to feel comfortable and what one can carry along.

Thus the ever creative, and adaptive, Nomad becomes a minimalist. Which is very, very, far from being boring. [emoji16]

If you have to ask, it's probably not for you(yet...lol).

For me, the opposite of Spiritualism is Materialism. I don't view either one inherently better than the other, they are just one of many choices we all get to make for ourselves. If I want others to try and respect my choices, I have to try and respect their choices.

The problem with owning stuff is it starts to own you.

Insurance, storage, maintenance, worry about theft, registrations

I am not one to talk though because I hoard stuff.  But at least I can see that I am a slave.

What kinds of hobbies don't need a lot of stuff to do? Walking could be a healthy hobby but...yuck lol.

I have thought about metal detecting, photography, Geo caching, a dog, hiking. I think about doing alot of stuff...lol.

worst for me is hobbies that are alive :) :)

when I hit the road I want nothing alive with me except for my hubby, I guess I will let him live.

a non-breathing hobby can be thrown to the side, squished into a space and travel without worry, anything alive, now you have to truly put real life effort into keeping it just that, alive!

but if it floats your boat go for it.

I’ve taken up quilting and rock hunting. Lots of fun.

You will want something to do that involves an activity you love to do and that occupies your mind so well that you don't realize how the hours could possibly have flow by so quickly. Otherwise you might end up crawling up the walls of the van and right out of the nomadic life. But you do need a blend of a hobby or a couple of hobbies that gets you up off the couch and out of doors and also a more sedentary, indoor, hobby that is good for rainy days and/or winter days that have far too little daylight for outdoor hobbies.

I am not going to make specific suggestions because hobbies are very personalized to the individual, no one hobby fits everyone.

Minimalism is something I strive for in my life, but could probably be best described as better organization of the items I do have.I am happier when everything is in it's place, and there is a place for everything, I am unhappy when I can't find something, or don't have something because of having no room

Poison Dart Frogs sound like a neat "niche" style hobby that not everyone will appreciate, but don't actually take up too much room, or time. Good luck, supplies, and animals can always be sold quickly when van life comes calling.

a minimalist like me doesn't have a choice actually.....you are hard wired not to have junk around ya :)
kinda the true opposite of a hoarder. I physically can't stand junk around me, I must have less junk and stuff in my space or it drives me batty. So whatever space I do have will always be minimally occupied around me. When I feel like some overload is happening, garbage bags come out, stuff is given away and I got back to a cleaner slate in life and just ditch stuff til I feel like there is less around.

less is more is my motto in life truly LOL

At first I read that as....a non-breathing hubby can be thrown to the side.  :s
