My personal situation is not stable.   I have planned on living in a van, but if I leave quickly, how do I get my mail?  I live in Illinois and I believe they require a permanent address.   Can I just have my mail forwarded to a PO box and keep the old mailing address for any requirements?   Will the Post office forward my mail to a PO box indefinitely?   Thanks so much.

Long term, I'd set up your home address in a state that's RV friendly, short term I'd try and have it forwarded to a friend, relative, or even a P.O Box

I'm in Illinois and have looked into this a lot.  The first class mail will forward for a year, but you will need an actual verifiable address for plates and drivers license, so you're good to go until those come due.  You can stretch out the plates for that first year by getting the notice in your forwarded mail and buying your new sticker either online or through the mail.  If your DL is good for a while, you'll be okay that first year at least.  That will give you some time to consider a more receptive state than this one.

I also live in Illinois. I used a UPS mailbox for about 6 months while living in a van. Worked good

A former resident of an area will be good for some time with temporary arrangements. Your mileage may vary.
