No worries man. The mods can do all of the general moves, locks, and bans. Bob and Katie have the uber power to do a whole lot more to the board.

I have a Winchester .177 cal. pellet rifle that I hunt with. I've killed squirrels and rabbits with mine.

Joey: I'd be interested in reading everything you're willing to share about your pellet gun, brand, pellet or bb etc, and the specifics of the kills with it. Do you have any idea of the muzzle velocity at the number of times you pumped it? If you use pellets, did you select a heavier one than those normally available from Walmart, etc? Or maybe cast your own pellets, solid lead?

Were they single shot kills on both rabbits and squirrels? If so, precisely where did you hit them? All in the same spot? What distance did you fire from?

Did the projectiles lodge in the carcass or pass through it?

Technical information's what I'm interested in.

The link didn't work for me but it's no big deal. I've done a lot of wondering and thinking about the potentials for air rifles, and you sound as though you might be a source to get some answers.

Lewis and Clark used an air rifle, a Girandoni. This was a large bore air rifle. We're talking 9mm up to 50 caliber. They worked off of 800 psi. It took 1500 strokes to pressurize the rifle. I'm not sure if that was for a single shot. Probably not though. Because they called the Girandoni a repeating rifle. They used them to bring down big game such as deer.

You can google 'Lewis and Clark air rifle' to find out more info. Wiki has a page too. And I think there is a U-Tube video also.

Interesting stuff.

Wade

Thanks Wade. Yeah, it was the Lewis and Clark anecdotes got me interested in the matter. I alway intended to follow up on it, slipped my mind sometime in the past. Gracias,

I always buy the .177 pellet, weight 7.9 gr. Master Point ammo, that is made by GAMO. The tip is pointed like a cone.I think you can buy the pellets at Walmart,I get them at Academy Sports. The point,on the GAMO brand of pellets, looks like they were CNC machined/made (shiny). Other people make the same type but Quality counts with ammo. The rifle I have shoots 1100 fps. I have been an avid outdoorsman since a very young age. I like to stalk hunt and I try to get as close as possible,so I can make a clean kill. I guess anywhere between 20 ft. and farther.Usually the pellets go clean through, unless you hit bone.

    I fixed the link Joseph.

Nice! Very Nice! I have a Benjamin Marauder .25 cal PCP for the same but can take down boar in addition. When we're both out there we gotta do a hunting trip together sometime!

Joey: Was the .357 rifle you mentioned an air gun? Sounds impressive.

Even though it's the velocity gets squared in the kenetic energy equation for muzzle energy and energy on impact, I'd guess the energy bleeds off rapidly enough on the projectiles the size and weight of pellets to be a cause for concern with larger game.

But a .357 with a velocity of 550 fps is getting up into energy numbers equivalent to a lot of medium/large bore pistols.

Sorry Joey and Joe. I meant to move a bunch of the posts we had about air guns to a new thread and somehow nuked them instead. This is what I get for trying to mod while using mobile wifi.

Let's pick up this convo over here though ... Air rifle enthusiasts

Joey: I made several posts after that last one but evidently they violated a rule of one sort or another and got deleted.

If you want to know about what some big guns among hunters are saying you might websearch Jim Roach, hogs with .357 air rifle and read the comments by other hunters.

I'm thinking I've posted enough on the subject, given the deletions.

Read the post before this one.

Geez, Jack, this jump to persecution theories is getting old. You've always got some b**ch about the running of this forum. Why don't you start your own? Not everything that happens is malintent. Mistakes happen.

People don't have to like the way we run the place. They don't have to like us. Respectful disagreements are perfectly acceptable. But this running commentary on every post or thread or forum that is relocated, rearranged, or deleted is monotonous. Start your own forum, if this one is so unacceptable.

People volunteer a lot of time and effort to make this place as welcoming, efficient, useful and safe for as many people as possible. We get it wrong sometimes. But none of us signs on on the morning thinking "how can I f**k with the forum and piss off the members today?"

Please lighten up.
