Colorado Backcountry Adventure on youtube has a tacoma but I don't know if it is a short bed. He details how he built he's storage and how he camps in it. I think he's 6' and sleeps diagonally.

sure its possible. But very few people probably could. Unless it was that or a hard ground.

I had same configuration in a dodge dakota. While effective to haul multiple people or decent cargo, living space would be tight and quite uncomfortable. But like I said...better than a hard ground.

I use the back seat of my full-size F-250 to sleep when I am on roadtrips and away from the RV. I'm short but I'm not sure I could make a smaller truck work. I have my truck outfitted with a proper bed (mattress, sheets, comforter) in the cab with a camp box (stove, fuel, other kitchen stuff), a tote of clothes, tote of food and a cooler. It's amazingly comfortable and I make it work for weeks at a time, and would live like that if I HAD to with two dogs but it wouldn't be my first choice

I sleep in a 6' bed with the tailgate down. The dog gets shotgun, day and night.

I don't live in one, but spent many weeks sleeping in one with a snugtop. It is better than the back seat, I tell you that, but still not the ideal for living in it (at
least not for me), and I'm only 5 feet 3"  :p with the carpet kit and storage on both sides of the bed, I'm only left with a small space to turn around, also I fit

perfectl vertically, but one less inch, and my feet would hit the tail gate. The carpet kit took a lot of space. My truck is midsize chevy colorado.

I would put a camper shell, or pickup topper on it.

There are some nice ones in fiberglass or aluminum that are not hugely expensive...although none of them are cheap unless you can find a bargain on craigslist.

Hi Eugeneroses, I tried to sleep on the back of my Nissan FRontier (less than 5'5" bed) and slept diagonally for a while but a few inches of my feet crunched, no insolation, lots of pillows and blankets and in the San Diego Coast. It became a hassle going to the bathroom and did not have a porta potty or the bucket. I bough a bucket set up now and since I already tried to finance a used 4x4 long bed pick up and denied due to not so good credit I found pics of people who cut out the back of the bedthat connects to the back seat cabin, I have a crew cab and my truck is not new, its beat up  and its got fover 270K miles so at this point it does not matter to me to cut it out and open up an extra 4foot opening and connect it with a accordion boot and something else for the outside to prevent water leaks and insulate it from the inside with carpet or something, I'll figure it out. I've been wanting to get me a small RV but money is tough unless its under $2K or I find a dealer to finance it. Im at a very dangerous point with my mental health and where I live temporary, its affecting me very very bad and I must go until the weather here warms up. I'm considering driving to Slab City and hopefully find a few good people to be close so we can watch our belongings. I'm not an angel and do enjoy some light liquor and other things but I'm not a severe problematic person who cannot control himself. I'm just being honest in case someone recognizes me. I'm a very trustworthy person, I own my small little home which I've been trying to sell but this cold has been ugly and after being y full propane set up for cooking and heating I'm ready to go! I also bought me that grinder at a pawn shop for 25 bucks so I'm ready to cut out my bed and hope to find good people to help, I need to talk to people, make friends, and I am not ashamed to tell that Ive been extremely depressed here stuck inside the house, there is nothing here to do and I'm not going to rot here so I have to say hello to people and talk and socialize. And don't be surprised if you see me cry at times, its not a sign of weakness but its things many people have no clue what i've gone through and trying to find happiness and people to socialize with. ****, who knows if ,y truck will leave me stranded. Feb is a short month and I get paid soon to get going, change my oil, get a spare battery, kand possible a solar panel set up. Here is a sample pic I found of someone who cut out the back and able to get into the back seat. One of the problems I found when going stealth in public was havin to crawl to the back but cutting the back as you see in this pic you can set it up really neat and not have to ever crawl through the back even at a mall somewhere.

Of course the ideal would be an 8foot bed and then every opportunity opens but mine is 5.5" foot bed and its all I got to work with now, I'm 5'6 tall.

"Shotgun" typically refers to the front passenger seat.  It's frequently turned into a game, of sorts, when a bunch of guys go out...someone calls "Shotgun!", and they get to ride there.

What kind of seats do you have?

I've got a crew cab pickup, and I'd like to remove the rear seats and front passenger bucket seat, then build out a flat floor/bed area. That should provide more than enough length to stretch out. Biggest obstacle to that is the airbag sensor that is built into the passenger seat. If it's missing, all of the airbags shut down. I've got to find a way to bypass that.

Interesting! My rear seats where taken off the day I bought it thinking I'd be in Hawaii and cover it for throwing SCUBA gear. I now have a big subwoofer with amps and I'm going to see if I can actually sleep comfortable lenth wise and if I can that will be fantastic and less stealth worry. I slept in Colorado Springs for 4 nights a few days ago and its really different than San Diego, it was easier in San Diego.

Not a Tacoma but I’m living out of the bad of a crew cab Silverado with an ARE topper. Last year I went for 5idsh months, this year I intend longer. Being able to sleep with legs fully extended is a must. Last year I couldn’t the entire time and it was borderline miserable some nights (especially the hot nights).
