I wanna be a rubber tramp when I grow up...

I'm very excited about spending more of my future out on the road in beautiful places.  I'm planning to spend the hot summers away from the Socal deserts and eventually have some kind of vehicle to live out of.   For now I'm going to start working out how to sleep and live out of my 2010 Scion xB.

I do a lot of camping, and usually bring along my tent and an aerobed so I'm comfortable and love cooking out on my little stove.  But my next camping trip I'm going to see if I can stretch out and sleep in the back of my little box.  I'm 6'2" so it may be a challenge.  I don't want to modify the seats, as I still need to use my car for regular stuff at home.

I'm going to install a roof rack to carry things up there while traveling.  But I like the idea of being able to quick overnight camp without having to set up my tent or bed and being out of the weather and a bit safer inside a solid vehicle.

Have any other tall folks ever slept in the back of an extremely small vehicle, any tips?

I love my xB it's been a great car, but the ground clearance is not enough to make it a permanent vehicle for this lifestyle I think.

Welcome here! Do a search for Scion here and on the Youtube site and I'm sure you'll find something. Some people are living out of some very small cars!

I had a first generation xB. With the front seat scooted forward and reclined, and the back seat folded, it was far from flat and smooth. I never tried sleeping in it, but if I had wanted to, I would've figured a way to have a platform on top of those seats. Maybe the second generation xB works better. Best of luck with that.

Yeah it looks kind of tight.  But I measured it's 6 feet from the folded forward seatback to the hatch.  So it looks like it would be doable in a pinch.  Gonna try it out during a camping trip after Labor Day.  I've been finding some good YouTube videos of others who have converted 1st and 2nd gen xB's.  I'll try and post some links to the better ones...
