One of the divergent things between my former wife and I was we'd be out somewhere and we'd see an object we both really liked. She would want to own it but I usually wouldn't. I was happy just to have seen the thing and know it existed.

I guess the key to the "low-desire life" is to not think you have to own all the cool things you see or achieve all the things you can imagine. If I remember correctly, Anthony Bourdain was in a Scandinavian country (Finland maybe?) and one of the locals told him the culture had a concept that roughly translated as "This is sufficient, I'm contented," or "I don't need more than this." Maybe that's one reason the Nordic countries consistently rank high on the happiness scale.

Many people in this country should be able to relate. Makes you wonder why there are so many financial slaves in a "free" country.

I often say "I want that" when what I actually mean is "That's really cool or interesting or beautiful and I admire it"

I LOVE that concept.  Sufficient and contented.

I wonder how much the fact that those countries are more socialist than the U.S. and provide more of a safety net has to do with their happiness?

Many people in this country might throttle back their efforts at work or business if they knew that things will be OK for them in their old age.

I retired at 58 and my wife at 55 with a good bit less than the "experts" claim you need to retire. I read that article earlier today and thought "good for them".
