Sunday I was washing my truck and found that the sides had been keyed.
They don't look like they are super deep, but can definitely feel a groove.
Has anyone had this happen? Does it reguire bodywork or can it just be buffed out.
My truck is old, but it's all I've got and I don't want it to rust out.

I'm just sick over it!!

My first thought is to get a can of primer to spray in the scratch, as a temporary band-aid, just to prevent any rust starting. That can then be sanded or buffed off as necessary later.

But I am definitely NOT an expert on auto body paint.

I bought a tube of touch up paint from a dealer for about $25 recently. You may be able to find it cheaper at a parts store.

When I get scratches, I just spray clear over them to protect them, but that way it's pretty much invisible, and I don't need to worry about color matching.

I see you are not familiar with desert pin stripping. every square inch of the sides of my truck is scratched. if someone keyed it would blend right in. highdesertranger

I don't know the condition of your truck (you said it was old), but I'd get some "#7 polishing compound" (that's what it's called) and try buffing the scratches out first.
If that doesn't work, get some touch-up paint and then keep the finish waxed for extra protection.
