I've been questioning the cost effectiveness of Vandwelling vs at least renting a room for some time. I already have a van that I bought to do this, but haven't been able to use it yet.
I'm not sure if it's that much cheaper, at least according to what Bob has put on the cheap RV living website.
Given that you have to pay a lot of money up front for the van, as well as any needed mechanical repairs, it's significant.
Here's the cost breakdown for someone living in a city with at least decent public transportation:
$400 to $650: renting a room
$50+ public transportation monthly pass, or $0 if you have a bike, including a folding bike
The additional costs of having a van:
$50 to $150 a month: van maintenance
$40: gym membership
$15 - $20: mailbox (especially that you can use as an address)
$25+, $40+ in bigger cities: storage (most of us can't get rid of certain things, or would be dangerous to bring with us in a van.)
$50+: gasoline
