does anyone know if there is an insurance provider that will give me a discount for a 6 months policy, or one that can be cancelled for a partial refund of unused time when i move on?

thx

i just started looking for quotes and it looks like 6months is kinda normal. i don't remember that when i lived in the US before, maybe i just can't remember stuff.

Well, I have State Farm. They allow me to pay monthly for my car insurance.  They charge me $2 a month extra  for that as opposed to one lump sum annual payment.  I can cancell the policy anytime I want.  Of course, I have to surrender the license plates to the state when I do that.

I don't know if they would allow me to SUSPEND the policy for a period of time, as opposed to cancelling it.  Maybe if you were registered as an rv, instead of passenger or comercial plates?

Regards
John

You'll want to keep some insurance on the van when it goes into storage while you're out of country.

While my van was in winter storage I kept the comprehensive coverage on it but cancelled all the liability portion. That meant that I couldn't drive it on the street but it was still insured.

That's important for more than having insurance on the vehicle to cover damage while it's stored. Each time you go to an insurance company to write a new policy you'll get dinged for higher rates, just like a new driver does. Having an existing policy is just like having a good credit rating.

Don't be too shocked by the higher premiums you're likely to have to pay. When I repatriated to Ontario after spending 14 years stateside, I had to do some serious hunting to find an insurance company that would take my US driving and insurance record into consideration for a new Canadian policy. Most wanted to charge me rates that were equivalent to a newly licensed driver. I had been driving for 40 years at that point and had a 5 star record.

Start early shopping for an insurance broker that will find you an insurance company that will take your overseas driving/insurance record into consideration - unless you'd rather they not... :D

thanks, so it sounds like no problem to cancel insurance if i need to. i was just asking about storing for the winter in the other thread for interest. i think i'll likely sell anyhow because even if i can find the money to come back for another trip next year, i was thinking of buying in NY/NJ area next year and touring the east. i've actually toured the west quite a lot already having lived there for 2 decades, and happy to go back this year too, but i was thinking east and middle east (not that middle east) would be good for a follow up trip.

I don't go through the trouble of investigating, comparing, and evaluating all the insurance companies out there- I use an insurance agent for that. They cover auto, home,, life, flood, etc. The agency sells Hartford, and many other brands of insurance. They go through all the trouble for me. The insurance companies are extensively vetted before being allowed to be on board. My agency then suggests which companies would work best for me. Do I need motorcycle and car insurance? They suggested the best one based on my needs- price, customer service should an accident happen, etc. The name of the one I use is Cogswell Agency in Great Falls, MT. You may not be able to use them specifically, but it might provide some info to help you make an informed decision.
