Igloo is recalling more than ONE MILLION 90-quart rolling coolers due to fingertip amputation and crushing hazards.

Just look up IGLOO COOLER RECALL.

Anyone with a Yeti (or similar) roto-molded cooler has discovered the lid is heavy and can pinch a digit if you let it drop...ouch.

Come to think of it...I've smashed a thumb in a car door once or twice...maybe they need to recall at least 90 million cars that have those dangerous doors on them!

Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, these recalls seem a bit frivolous.

I have one of those big coolers of over 100 quart capacity. I'll probably sell it to someone who has a pontoon party boat where it will probably live thereafter. Even my 60 quart is too large to deal with when full of ice and food.

Awhile back I was at a Family Dollar store after July 4 (the end of summer retail season) and saw 32 qt coolers marked way down to $12 dollars. Three of them would take up about the same space as a 100 qt one but easier to lift separately when loaded and move about. Also easier to slide to the edge of the door to drain the excess water out. (draining the water periodically is an art in itself as you want to keep a bit in them but if there is too much your ice will melt more quickly......I learned about this in a sail boating magazine years ago and it works)

But that's my experience with those large "happy hernia" ice chest coolers.
To me they are a false economy. But that's just my own opinion.

I have several of those smaller red & white "lunch box" or picnic type coolers too. Those with the locking lid that folds over the side are about 16 quarts in size. For a week end or overnight (sleep in the car/rig) one or two of these would be perfect. One 8 lb bag of ice could fill two of those with enough ice for a day or so depending on the temperature. I cut a 1 inch thick piece of styrofoam to fit into the top to cover the contents and it insulates much better that way. Even a folded up bath towel will help.

It's not the lid but the "folding tow-handle" that's the problem in the recall.................................

Yes, I saw that the handle was the reason that the cooler was recalled.

But in my case, an occasional finger pinch has happened with the heavy lids.
