I want to take my toys with me but I can't decide what to do. I'm an avid motorcycle rider and it will save a lot of gas money if I can park my van and explore on the motorcycle. So the motorcycle is definitely coming with me. I also love riding my 4 wheeler and in the areas I'm wanting to travel to, there are lots of areas where I could ride my ATV.

I guess my main question is....will pulling a 14 ft cargo trailer as opposed to a 10 ft cargo trailer be a problem while boondocking or primitive camping on public lands?

Gotta be worth taking your stuff you like with you.
Geoff

That was what I was thinking. That extra 4 feet wouldn't make that much difference. I'm good at backing a trailer(used to be a truck driver), so I'm not too concerned about that aspect. I've just not been to anything except RV parks. I didn't know if there were lots of places where space was really tight in some of the primitive camping areas.

I know a cargo trailer isn't exactly cool where 'stealth' is concerned, but about as stealthy as I plan on getting is the end of a wal-mart parking lot. Otherwise I'll be parked on public lands, campgrounds or RV parks.

I check out similar places here in Oz on my mountain bikes first them might take my truck in to camp.
Geoff

You could always consolidate the toys and buy a street legal dirt bike. Sure it's not the "best" for either off road or on road, but it at least gives you both in one package. You could then load it on the back of the van with one of those hitch mount racks.

The trailer wouldn't be that big of a deal if you plan to stay long term in RV parks, but I wouldn't think you would end up saving very much on gas if you do a lot traveling while you're hauling around a trailer. Anything you make up while riding the bike will be lost pulling it in the trailer if you are moving around a lot.

As far as stealth goes.. neither would be an ideal situation. Both a trailer and a bike on the back, would stand out. If you are long term in any one area people will notice something that isn't ordinary, specially cops. If you move town to town a lot then it's not as big of an issue.

the irregularities of dirt roads combined with extra length might increase your chances of high centering or bottoming out.
