Yes the magnetic base effectively turns the whole truck including the huge aluminum cap into a receiver.

Cool. My home DSL just took a dump, so my PC is offline, and I have no Netflix..... Bummer. :(
But I have learned to turn my Galaxy SIII phone into a WIFI hub, and have my new laptop linked to it, so I am coming to you via the new 'puter. Yay! Making progress.
So I am interested in being able to get TV reception via the laptop, for road use. I do have a digital TV antenna for the home, just need to get it up and hooked up, then use the PC as a glorified TV for home use - it is already using a flat screen TV as the monitor. But that's too much mass and complexity for a vanning system.
I am interested in your set up once you have it up and humming!

Software installed today 17 of 18 stations work flawlessly with no glitches.

And my computer does NOT meet the minimum hardware requirements.

This gets the LooRead seal of approval.

BTW HP 15" widescreen laptops with win 8 and dvd burner $229 at Walmart.

That's great to hear and a minimal investment.

the only one on line at $229.00 that I saw was a 14" std screen, do you have a link to the one you mentioned>? I'd like to review it.

It's in stock in the walmart off I-75 King's Highway exit in SW Fla.

I have no other info but it was a widescreen 15" HP.

I've had good luck and very surprisingly good reception with this antenna:
http://www.amazon.com/August-DTA102...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1416418739&sr=1-23

But I've tried other small antennas with the magnetic base and found absolutely horrible reception even when stuck to steel and elevated and repositioned and reautoscanned, the above linked antenna beat the magnetic base antenna each and every time on every available OTA station. I returned the magnetic based antennas and bought 2 more of the above link.

I have a F connector in my solar panel and one in my Steel body which sits about 18 inches lower and a slider switch to choose either antenna. The Lower antenna, to my surprise, has better reception all other factors being equal, and this might be from being in steel body rather than aluminum solar panel frame. Sometimes it is nice to have the antennas orientated differently and slide the switch back and forth to choose the better direction for reception. It recently came in very handy on a 1750 mile roadtrip.

These antennas do not thread on, they are a friction/clamp pressure fit, but stay put at 80 MPH when extended and elevated.

I use a 12v LED 13.3 inch RCA TV. It uses a fraction of the power my laptop requires, so I've never considered Lou's solution.

I also like having the TV going on while wasting time on this dang laptop, so there goes the power savings, but functionality is increased.
