Mainesail is a contributor to many Boating forums and knows his 12v DC electricity stuff better than any other person who contributes to any forum online, in the english language, in my opinion.

He has the tools, knowledge, capability, and experience  to convey this knowledge to the casual battery user.

I try and keep people from murdering their batteries with my posts on this forum, as so many people think an alternator is a magical battery charger, or that a dead battery simply needs to be recharged to be good as new, and all sorts of other myths concerning the care of lead acid batteries, and don't get me started on blinking green lights, and the 'just fine', head in the sand brigade.

Anyway, here is an Article written by THE man which might contribute to one less set of murdered Lead Acid batteries.

Do note he says that the Hydrometer cannot indicate battery health, and that his murdered batteries still had specific gravity readings all in the green despite only having 34% or their original rated capacity remaining.

The hydrometer should be used to see if charging sources are able to actually fully charge a battery to the top of its remaining capacity, and to tweak the charge settings to achieve a full charge, but a hydrometer cannot tell you that your battery has 90% or more capacity remaining.

I usually gain something from every article he posts online and thought this article could be helpful to readers on this forum.

No battery is going to last forever, but that does not mean they should be murdered within the warranty period due to ignorance either.  This just drives up their price.
