I didn't watch the video as I have waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much experience in collecting and shelling acorns. It's the most tedious chore I know. Also, the annual war with the squirrels and chipmunks burying acorns in my gardens was enough to put me over the edge. That said, they are a very versatile ingredient.

My grandmother showed me when I was really small. I was surprised the other day when a neighbor said they were poisonous. I went in to great detail about shelling, mashing, boiling, and grinding. She had to look it up.I told her it has been a mainstay in native diets for many years.

Wouldn't it just be easier to shoot the squirrel and eat it instead?

Lol, I agree that's a lot of work for a little bit of acorn flour. But the site itself looks to be full of great information about foraging, which I think will be a useful skill to have when I get on the road.

You would be surprised at how many you can crack open in just a few hours. If you have a sheller you can do about a pound in just a few minutes. It depends on how involved you want to become. You can make a home made sheller that is adjustable for different sizes of nuts,i.e.,walnuts,pecans,acorns,etc.
