Just a funny question. I have eight pairs. I use all of them. But in a van? Do I need all of them? How about you?

Only eight?

Seriouly, if you currently use all eight and your lifestyle and activities will remain nearly the same, you need all eight.

Me, three pairs.
One pair of heavy boots for motorcycling or hiking the countryside.
One pair of cushioned athletic shoes for regular walking (great for my plantar fasciitis that flares occasionally).
One pair of light slip-on slippers/loafers for around camp.

I have 4 pairs
Dedicated motorcycle boots. Icon field armor IIRC
Dedicated snowboard boots, bulky and get very little use
Modern Light Merrell "hiking boots" (might as well be tennis shoes)
Old Heavy steel shank Merrell hiking boots

I use to have a pair of shoes for use as "slippers" but have been transitioning to going barefoot.

I started with ten, now I'm down to four: 2 pairs of Keen Arroyo II's for everyday wear, some cheap-o Keen copies for muddy conditions, and my "dress" sneakers.

I'm not full time, but when i travel it's for a few weeks at a time. I usually have a pair of hiking boots for everyday where, a pair of Crocs for around camp and to step outside in the when nature calls - also work in the occasional public shower stall, and a pair of running or canyoneering shoes for hiking and climbing if I know I'm going to be walking in water. If I have my bike and plan to do anything but tooling around town I also take my motorcycle boots, and if I'm going to be meeting up with friends or family and plan to go out I may bring my cowboy boots.

That said, my last 3 week trip I forgot to throw any extra shoes in the trailer - had to do some service work on the truck first and just got to the point where I wanted to hit the road so I missed loading several things. I went the whole time with just my hiking boots that I wear everyday. So I guess the answer as to how many pairs do you "need" is 1. How many you want and will use is dictated by your lifestyle and available room to store them.

I have four: Two pairs of Vasque hiking shoes; one pair of sandals; one pair of crocs [Seahawks green].

Where can one even get Crocs these days? I went searching for them and all I found were some camo ones at Walmart.

Big 5 sporting goods.

I order my Crocs on line at a few different places depending on who has the cheapest price. Been wearing them everyday for the past 17 years and wouldn't wear anything else.

I have a pair of sneaks I never wear, Crocs sometimes, and a pair of Ecco sandals that were a gift from a SIL (I'd never pay that much for sandals), but mostly I wear flip flops.

For the *variety of conditions, I'm carrying five- including dress, caz, cross-trainers, muckboots--- tho I mostly wear my 8" RedWing boots everyday. The slippers are invaluable in camp after a hike. (Crocs 2003-7.)

I've made it through the whole winter with 1 pair of Merrell hiking shoes and 2 pair of sandals, one pair of which is in the shower bag for pubic showers.

I also have 1 pair of dress shoes packed in the storage bin with my dress clothes. They've not been unpacked, the only time I got in to a 'fit for dinner out' outfit, I just wore my Merrells because we were going to be doing the downtown historic district before dinner.

just buy vegan murerell shoes... they'll last long enough to get your moneys worth, and be super comfortable

This will be my biggest problem when downsizing for van life. hahaha  I have far too many shoes right now but I plan to get down to a pair of sneakers, hiking boots and flip flops.  Maybe a pair of dress shoes just in case.

2 pair Dr. Schools...(Fair) one pair of sneakers...and I think that's it...

I have a half dozen almost worn-out pairs of tennis shoes and one pair of flip flops. I bought another pair of tennis shoes today, my first new ones in 3 years. Most of the old ones will be discarded by summers end and I'll get one more new pair. New underwear is next on my list.

O.K., O.k., O.k. first of all, I am a woman ha ha ha ha ,
......and I reserve the right to have some shoes ( I KNOW I'm going to get flack from this post related to hoarding....)
But, the truth is, I had 34 pairs of shoes and scaled down to this for full time living in my minivan:
(1) pair of hiking boots, which I have never had time to use yet
(1) pair of required-for-the-job working shoes
(5-6) pairs of lay-flat flip flops for showers, and required working wear in the Middle East where I travel some for my job
(1) pair of dress, patent leather black pumps, required on military bases, I sometimes work on, for dress.
(5) pairs of tennis shoes.
