And, if you download Google Earth, you can find a place in Maps and take it into Earth, which is much more detailed. I like to use this for scoping out possible boondocking spots. Looking at forest roads this way, you can see where the dispersed campsites are and even determine size and accessibility, as in, will my rig fit in here? And you can see the type of vegetation and whether there is shade.

In my Google maps if you do a simple left click on an area that doesn't have anything "clickable" then a little window pops up with the coordinates of that spot, even in satellite view.  I don't know if there was a setting somewhere to enable that...???  One could then take a screen shot to save it somewhere or even add it to your personalized maps.  I've just started playing with Google My Maps and adding spots to it.  So far I dig it!

Thanks AJ, I never noticed that before.

On google maps, you can also right-click on "any" spot and a window will pop up. Then click on "What's here" and it'll also pop up the same GPS coordinates window as clicking on a vacant area.

I use the 3D option all the time in satellite view to zoom down on areas to check them out. Then I can really see what the ground looks like, better than satellite view. Here is a spot on Plomosa Road farther out towards Bouse from where the caravan is taking place.
