I am a google maps freak, I can sit and check out maps looking for places that would be great to camp at for hours. There are some really nice places to camp not far from Quartzsite but i never see anything posted about those sites.
It is obvious these places are being used.
I know on the fishing websites I follow in Minnesota that people get pissed off when you mention anything about fish being caught anywhere.
I would imagine that it is taboo to talk about any camping hot spots on the forums also.
I guess common sense tells me that it's not good to volunteer to much information to the 100's of thousands of people that migrate to that area in the winter.
Do VanDweller members share camping hot spots?

Not the really excellent ones that we don't want to share.

Many RV'ers prefer to camp near a group, instead of by themselves. I like both.

Please PM me a good spot in that area, when you have time. Thanks

Do you guys share spots seeing as you can only use them for short periods of time?
Are there Camping spots that you can stay at for extended lengths of time? Over 14 days.

Only with our good friends and in person. Also under threat of sudden death if they blab about them to others.... :p

Seriously, some of the best camping spots have become overcrowded and overused due to people doing stuff like YouTube videos live from their location or just blabbing about how beautiful a place is and giving co-ordinates.

That and if you tell casual acquaintances about the good spots, don't go expecting to have any peace, quiet or alone time if you also tell them when you're going to be there.

This is a dilemma for many of us. I've been sharing sites on https://freecampsites.net/ since 2009. We've camped in many of the sites contributed by other people so it only seems fair to give back, however, due to the increase in the popularity of boondocking I will probably stop contributing spots in popular areas.  I'll gladly share any in the areas that aren't as well traveled and popular.

Sorry about the PM, I was trying to send it to Riverman.
It's nothing that private, you both probably know all about it anyways.

Send it to me too please

I am also a map freak, but Google maps really. if you want the maps that all other maps are based on you need the USGS maps.

I will never share good spots especially over the internet. I have been burned once already by sharing a spot. if you want any infofrom me you will have to tag along. highdesertranger

Make a note: Follow HDR to learn all his secret spots...

I wish every one had that attitude, highdesertranger. I too have been burned by seemingly harmless boondocking blabbermouthing. For instance, you tell a friend about the location, and make them promise to keep their mouth, and then they give the location to a friend, who give it to a ...

One reason a lot of us camp out of a 4x4 is to get just a little farther away from people and now days even that can be hard to do.

Thank you for that! I appreciated the tip ;-) Might someday use it, as I've been curious about that area.

I do contribute to freecampsites.net, but only the spots that I liked and don't plan to return to for any length of time, in other words, wouldn't be bummed to find occupied and are not on my customary migration route. I do appreciate others sharing reviews of spots so that I have somewhere to light down at the end of a travel day or if I just need to get off the road for a while, but the hidden gems that I find while 4-wheeling remain hidden.....selfish, selfish....;)

Besides seeing formerly wonderful campsites become over-crowded, noisy, and dirty, there is another reason for keeping quiet about specific locations. And it seldom gets talked about.

Many people are turned on by the romance and adventure of travel and dispersed camping. That's one reason why they started into it.

And then one of the blabbermouth blogs makes it easy for anybody and everybody to go there. And the sense of adventure just went poof! Finding the site was always half the fun. And yet the notion persists that a person is "nice" or "generous" or "helpful" for giving away locations.

Blabbermouthing is only useful for the people who are just looking for a FREE place to camp, and don't care about anything else. They would be just as happy in a free truck stop.

I am talking about the satellite pics not the Google Maps, sorry i wasn't more clear on that. The Google maps are good for businesses and streets
but the satellite views are the cats meow for finding anything. You can zoom right in on objects. I wish i knew how to put a GPS coordinates overlay on the on the pics., that would be the bomb there.
I'll look ya up at the RTR, no shock collars on me, leash maybe. JK lmao

In my Google maps if you do a simple left click on an area that doesn't have anything "clickable" then a little window pops up with the coordinates of that spot, even in satellite view. I don't know if there was a setting somewhere to enable that...??? One could then take a screen shot to save it somewhere or even add it to your personalized maps. I've just started playing with Google My Maps and adding spots to it. So far I dig it!
