Over the past couple of months I've been researching cardwelling/vandwelling and have decided to give it a shot this May. I'll be living out of my 2008 Honda Fit and traveling around the South East. It's the perfect way to travel as a (or will be) recent college graduate with a little saved up money from a part time job. My dream is to eventually travel out west with my boyfriend after he finishes grad school in the Fit. Until then I'll be working as a nurse tech from home to save money for more exciting adventures!

I want to thank Bob for having this forum and for everyone who participates! You all have been so helpful and I'm learning quickly that cardwelling is all about creativity. I can't wait for my trip and to share my experiences with others :)

KirstieRay, I so admire your gumption in demanding everything you can get out of life! Way to go! No doubt there will be good times and bad in your new adventure but one thing you can be sure, one day you will look back at it with fond and wonderful memories!!

As tiny as the Fit is it makes a pretty good little home! I have a friend who is 6'4" and he is doing exactly the same thing you are doing in a Fit and so far he loves it!

I have a few pictures of his setup and I will try to find them for you. We'd love to see how you fix it up and hear all about your travels when you get that far!

I'm starting to acquire the necessary items for my fit set up. I'll post pictures when I'm finished! Most of it is pretty simple but I'm having trouble with the bed. I was thinking of using a twin futon mattress folded up on the passenger side. I've heard of using body pillows as well, I just don't know how well that would work for me. If you have any other ideas I'd love to hear them!

I found my photos of the guy living in the Fit and I'm sorry they are not very helpful. It's hard to shoot living in such a small space. Here they are:

I have better photos of someone living in a PT Cruiser and another guy living in a Chevy malibu and they are both surprisingly comfortable. Even a little more room makes a big difference.

Hi - I'm new here, too.
I haven't had the chance to see all there is, but I have an idea I'm working on that might work.
I'm going to make a large sun shade, likely glued/sewed/tied to a tarp that I can stake on one side of my Caravan, pull over the top, and serve as a shelter/porch on the other side. I'm going to design it to find a way to attach screening for bug deterents, too. -- Silicone? Gorilla Glue? nylon string? aluminum foam boards? -- my main objective is to keep the sun off the car in the heat and to add privacy.

Thanks for the pictures! I also found some more photos on Google showing two people camping out of the Fit. I think I might build a small wood bed frame that would even out the floor to the passenger seat. I'll also give me room to store items below. I just bought visors for my car, but once I get another pay check I'm going to start looking at futons :)

Update!

Made some upgrades to my car's transformation and it's almost ready to hit the road. I added some visors and finished the bed. Pictures below :)

Used a 3inch memory foam with a cover quilt and a fitted sheet for the bed. It's comfy enough for two people laid out like that. My roommate even came outside to try it out with me and she loved it. What's awesome about the memory foam is that it can fold into thirds and become a one person bed. I was worried that I would waste money on a one person air pad and still have to buy something else to use when traveling with another person. Later on I'm going to buy a roof rack for storage and build a platform to raise the trunk area 5 inches higher so the bed is completely flat. But for now those are minor things. My boyfriend and I are considering taking a one night vacation to Savannah, GA just to try it out! I'll definitely post a review of that trip once I'm back.
