New to forum so introducing myself. I just bought a 1991 ford econoline cargo van to live, at minimum, this summer in high elevation mountains of NM and hopefully CO. If it still runs well,  I'll continue to decent but cool weather in winter. My snowdog and I both like the cold. The biggest adjustment will be managing heat and I'm researching. Other than that have experienced many difference housing or non-housing situations so this much space is great to have. I feel very blessed.
Not planning any major upgrades just want to see how it runs and I'll modify as needed. Would like to get a small solar set-up eventually for music, movies, etc. I'm always interested in people's gear /setups so:
(P.s. female middle age)
Thermarest Mondo king 3d from rei,  sierra designs mummy sleeping bag...worked fine tent camping even in low 20 degrees f.
I use small propane canisters and top burner screw on stoves. I bought a high output two burner setup for large tanks which I need to assemble. I only have a small and medium camp pot, two cast iron skillets and one ea. camp knife/fork/spoon combo. I invested in a small yeti cooler.
Clothes I can wash myself with a hand agitator and bucket. Works better than commercial washer.
I have a portable plastic lid for bucket for pottying. If I am boondocking with no facilities and in woods for sometimes a week straight and no one wants poo bags inside their rig. (No trash pickup.) May have to dig cathole, dump bucket and rinse. Knees too weak to potty over hole regularly. Another issue to consider is...tbc..

Hi. I had a good time in New Mexico--spent time in Alamogordo, Albuquerque, and Roswell.

Before I started van-camping I lived in a second-floor apartment in Florida, where it was so hot durinbg the day that even the A/C didn't help much. My solution was to simply not be home during the hot part of the day--I spent all my time in museums or libraries or malls or parks or whatever, and didn't go home till it was near dark and cooling off. I do the same thing with the van--I'm gone all day and don't go "home" till sundown. And i have a little electric fan to use if it's still warm: it draws only a quarter-amp, so i can run it all night if I need to witghout drawing down the battery too much.

...for women at least is keeping menstrual pads as trash, especially with bears and animals. Or even bladder pads. There are instructions to make your own cotton pads which you can wash and dry like other cotton clothing. Also available to purchase.
I have few keepsakes, clothing, shoes, so I don't even need an extra storage space. I just bought a few plastic bins and it's easier to stay organized by kitchen, camp supplies, emergency supplies, etc.
I would like to find a bin large enough to pour water over me, into it, for showering.
I travel with a large dog so I feel comfortable being alerted to animals of all kinds.
A few things I have found to make life easier, while car camping, are plastic egg containers found at Walmart camping area (egg bras), a small rv folding trash can in rv section and small snap dish drainer also in rv.

Very good suggestions. I will differ in that I will be staying in remote BLM etc land and also responsible for a dog with me at all times. Will not be in towns 90% of time. I believe it will be best to stay under trees, high elevation, use window coverings and bug screen ventilation.
Where are you staying now?
If you ever come back, the Gila National Forest (western nm) is quite stunning.

I'm currently in Topeka KS. Leaving next weekend for Kansas City, then Indianapolis.

Didn't get to see Gila, but was at White Sands, the Trinity Test Site, Carlsbad Caverns, the UFO Museum in Roswell, and a few other places.

I'll probably loop back sometime and stay in Santa Fe. I stay mostly in cities because I need steady wifi for my job.

Hi Cancan. You sound great. Best of luck to you!

Welcome to the CRVL Forums   :)

I've read your description of your rig and looked at pictures of it in another thread.   Your thinking is spot on in my own opinion.   Running the rig for awhile to see how it is going to hold up an perform for you is well reasoned.   I also own a 91 Ford Econoline E-350 one ton.  (it is extended with  a high top 351 V8 and Auto/Overdrive transmission)  I also drove it empty for awhile to see how it would fare for me.  If you have any questions you're welcome to PM me.

In the meanwhile I'd invite you to check out my two websites below.  One is for a simple setup of a cargo van.
The other is for planning trips or using while on the road to find things that will help make your life on the road
easier.  There are over 100 links to these things in it and several apps for weather forecast and other unique
items that are handy to know about.   (imagine a Swiss army knife useful information)

I've traveled in my Van(s) since college years and learned how to make it work for me, even when working corporate jobs where I worked short term assignments and traveled quickly between branches living a unique
nomadic life.

Hey,  all the best.

I guess I missed this thread before now....
