My husband and I just bought an '85 class C RV and are planning a cross county trip in a few weeks. We will be traveling from Florida to California with our daughter and two German Shepherds. My husband is a member of the IBEW and he plans to find work out on the West Coast. I found this site thanks to "Trebor English" (screen name) who is my father in law, you may also know him from the resent Enigmatic Nomadic YouTube video about the homemade cooler.
This forum seems to be a wealth of active members, which is a valuable resource to us.

Welcome to the CRVL forums FrenchOnion! It sounds like you have a great trip planned! Send us updates when you get the chance. :)

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to the CRVL Forum   :)

I think your husband could find work all along the way being with the IBEW.   I don't know if you are going to tow a small Chevy S10 type of pickup truck behind you or not,  for him to go to work in or have for errands.

I'm sure it will be a life long memory for your daughter and the anticipation of going to live in California should have her thrilled for the whole trip.

I've known of those who set their RV up in some of the nicer trailer parks and live in it  for the short term while working.  Then they go back on the road again to pursue another leg of their journey. (often when they hear of
another job when the job that they are on begins to play out)

All the best on our trip !  Sounds like an adventure.

That was a great video. Welcome to the forum! What are some of the places you're excited about seeing between FL and CA?

Welcome! I had missed that video on the homemade cooler, so thanks for mentioning that. Keep us posted on your travels... there is a section called Captain's Log if you might want to keep us up to date.

We plan to take I10 the whole way and will be towing a truck. We both have family who happen to live in cities along 10. San Antonio and Tuscon so those will be two definite stops, are main goal though is to get out west and do most of our site seeing there. Specifically, we will be between San Jose and San Francisco, so we want to hit the PCH and my husband wants to surf Mavrick's. I will check out the captain's log area of the site, thanks for the tip!!

Traveling along 10 from FLA through San Antonio you will pass through the small town of Columbus, Tx (about where 10 and 71 meet) where I work (at the HEB)
If you happen through toward evening and you want a place to park over night, the HEB / WalMart lot is RV friendly, or if you don't like parking lots, I'm about 20 miles away in Garwood

Depending on the length of your Class C, Highway 1 in Ca. can be a chore. 2 lane road with lots of twists. You can jog over to highway 101 for most of that leg of the trip. I also see people surf in Santa Cruz Ca. This is on the last leg of your journey. It is not far south of S.F. about an hour drive as I remember. They have a small amusement park / boardwalk that might be a stop as well.
Have a good wetsuit, the water is cold. In Northern Ca. the water comes from Alaska. In Southern Ca. it comes from Mexico. They meet at point conception. The water where they meet is often very agitated. Not a great place to go sailing.
You can make good money in Ca, but all the cost of living is very high. The more you make, the higher taxes you pay as well. I had friends that worked out of IBEW local 6. I lived in the East Bay most of my life. Now I am in the desert.
Welcome to the tribe.

We have a 23 foot class C, do you think we'll have a problem going along the PCH? We are only going to be on it between San Jose and San Francisco. My husband definitely will have a wet suit, he's a fairly avid surfer and has has his eye on this spot for a while. I am so stoked that a site like this exists, I found a different site but they want a membership fee for any information on their site, seeed pretty lame .

You will be fine. That portion of the highway is easy .
