Hello everyone! I am slowly but surely coming into the Vandweller life. All I have read, researched and watched (videos) has really pulled me in and grabbed my attention. I have yet to actually start building my first van, however I will give a little background on myself.
I am 29 years old, living in Florida USA (woohoo!), I have a full time job that allows me ample time off to travel. To counter that, the job doesn't pay much, so international travel is not the easiest. I have previously traveled across the USA with a couple of my best friends in a Kia Sorrento. Let me tell you, 3 girls in a midsize SUV is a definite way to test a friendship
... But anyway, that was when I realized there is so much to see right here in my own back yard. So many beautiful places, so many drastic landscapes, mountains, water, deserts, forests etc. I've always loved traveling but I knew that I wanted to see more of what was so easily available and accessible.
Recently, I decided I deserved a new car. I am still driving my first car I got when I first started driving. The car is a 13 year old Toyota Rav4. She runs well, but shes showing some signs of wear. I am too in love with her to sell her, so I was planing on keeping her for hauling some things if needed and buying a smaller car. I went to a dealership to look at some new Mustangs hoping to ride off in the sunset with my hair blowing. I saw a Ford Transit and was intrigued for some reason. To my and the car salesman's surprise I shifted from a new sportscar to cargo vans instantly. I had NO IDEA what I was getting into. I thought about converting it slightly, throwing an air mattress in with all my camping supplies... After I got home I researched the idea and realized HOLY CRAP im not even original! But look at all these other people with GREAT ideas and vans all over the place!
So, here I am. After months of research and contemplation I am not starting to interact with the community to help get some first hand advice and learn from those who are living the life and doing it best! I'm hoping to start with a used Chevy Express 2005 or newer and go little by little from there. I have not been this excited and eager to begin a new adventure in a long time. Thank you all for sharing your stories (good and bad), they have helped me tremendously already. I look forward to becoming a vandweller, not fulltime at first, maybe one day... but enough to enjoy it and travel leisurely a few times a year. I'd like to keep up with youtube videos and help others get into van life too once I get my van and start documenting the build process.
