I'm hoping someone can help me or give me some advice. 2003 Toyota Camry "was" running great. I'm planning on buying used truck so I bought this ODB2 device that connects to Android phone via bluetooth using Torque app to check out vehicles before I might buy one. Anyhow, I thought i would test it on my car so I plugged it into car under steering wheel, started engine and now my car idles very rough and after 5-6 seconds it stalls. I have removed it but car stills idles rough and shuts off after 5 seconds. All I did was plug it in and read error codes. My car never stalled or idles rough before this.

What the heck did I just do to my car??? How to I fix this??

:-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

You didn't do something weird like clear the computer? I believe most vehicles have a memory based on O2 sensors etc and the engine can run poorly if these are cleared, but the computer should re-learn them as the car is driven... But it sounds strange it would be running so poorly that it stalls. Someone else will probably have a better idea than me.

I am no expert either, but was told years ago with OBD1, if you rest the computer it would run a bit rough for 25-30 miles or so. I dont think it would run bad enough to be stalling.

When you tested the car did you get any codes?

I did not get any error codes and I did not clear any codes. I just connected and checked for error codes.

I'm going to try calling a Toyota dealer to see if they have ever heard of this happening. I'm hoping I don't have to take it in somewhere.

I did read on one website if you did reset computer (which I don't think i did but maybe app did) the car may run rough. It said to disconnect the battery cables for 30 minutes and try starting car again. I may try this in the morning.

As far as I know disconnecting the battery ought to clear the memory and serve the same result as clearing the codes with the machine (if that's what you did). But I might be wrong.

Just disconnect the negative battery cable.  Then turn on the headlights for 30 seconds.  Any volatile memory will be deleted.  Then turn the light switch off & reconnect the negative battery terminal.  Restart car.  If it does not run better after doing this, there is a chance that the computer in your car that controls the engine/transmission has been damaged by the device that was plugged in.

Hoping for your car's speedy recovery.

thats where i would start, disconnect battery and let it reset, it will run a little different but not heard of stalling, some pros here will respond, let see what they say

Have you thought about contacting both the manufacturer and seller of the device and telling them what it has done to your car?  After all way should you have to pay for any repairs if they are at fault....if it comes down to that.   Good luck, hope it's a EZ fix.                 TJB

hmmm. I was thinking of getting one of those bluetooth ODB2 devices. Now I'll make sure I do more research before doing so.

Chico has the right answer. hint, never plug in cheap no name code readers into your computer. actually unless you know what you are doing you shouldn't plug any code reader in. highdesertranger

Yes i bought a cheap bluetooth also. Had some bad solder connections inside. It got hot and i unplugged it real quick. Threw it away.

I have an SCT X4 Programmer. It is "married" to my Explorer and I use it to load different tunes, but it will read any OBD2 car's codes without messing it up. BTW, with my "Tow" tune, and Premium fuel, I get 3 MPG better than stock, and the truck drives much better.

BUT, it's $400, so not cheap, but serves a dual purpose. Tunes my truck, and helps me diagnose problems with the kid's cars.

Unfortunately, does NOTHING for throttle response. :dodgy:

Info Here

I have the old non-BT version OBD-II scanner, as I do not do Blue Tooth.  Never had any problem with it.  It has helped me with diagnosing problems on my minivan.

Yah I have an old Matco got at the flea for 10 bucks works great my current ride has no plug in. I would rather buy a broken snap-on ratchet I can fix than a brand new shiny pos with a rubber handle and anodized black finish.

I have a Panasonic in the dash. Depending on the tunes I load, such as "Six Days on the Road", I get at least 30 mph over the speed limit.

The ECM in modern (fuel injected ) vehicles learn or adapts it's fuel trim and idle air control to compensate for changes as the engine ages and components ware. Disconnecting the battery will reset these parameters back to factory settings, just drive the car for awhile and it will relearn the fuel/air trim setting and it should return to normal.

I actually took it to a mechanic who basically said the exact same thing. Somehow I wiped the memory were it stored what it had learned over the years and I had to re-teach it. Go figure.
