Hey all,

My names Scott. I am a preacher...just so you know. Always freaks people out when they hear that so thought I would get it out of the way. I have been in ministry for 20 years and we have moved around a lot...about every three years.

I have a wonderful wife of 22 years and we have four children, the last of whom will be graduating this spring from High School...all of them are in college. That give you a little taste of where I'm coming from. I have a lot more questions than answers, but that's ok.

I have always had it in my mind to one day get an rv of some sort and travel around the U.S. and possibly preaching/doing my own ministry to help fund my travels. Not sure about that yet either, but one thing I do know. I have been reading a lot over the past few weeks. Purchased and read Bob's book and just about every article on the website. I also bought another book by Jason Odom and read it. Seems to me this lifestyle would fit me perfectly, especially as my kids are growing up, and it is just my wife and I.

That having been said, I have lots of questions. Things like what do you think would be the best choice for a couple to live in as far as vehicle? Love the idea of workamping and staying on public or BLM land. My wife and I are both from AZ, and we love the west, but have found ourselves in GA and in the south for most of our married life.

Do any of you see any sort of "need" for spiritual guidance/pastor/chaplain sort of thing in the campgrounds or area's you have been. Is that something that is even doable?

I have always had a sort of nomadic nature. I have loved moving to new areas and meeting new people, but after a few years it all seems to get old to me...I'm rambling now...just wanted to introduce myself. Don't know that I will have a lot to contribute, but will have lots of questions.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi and welcome Scott. Glad to have you with us....hope you find the ideal rig for you and your wife. Also hope you find a way to use your training and beliefs to be helpful to some folks.

Peace,
Bri

Thanks...I just wanted to say too that I'm not here with any agenda...just want to learn and hopefully get down to basics. For me, sooner the better. If I can perhaps do ministry as well, that would be great, but I feel that I can do that wherever I am and whatever I'm doing.

I get it. That's good. Our main agenda must remain to inform folks about and learn about, the cheaprvliving, life...

I get pretty wordy myself about things I shouldn't...thankfully the people here are pretty forgiving and have never thrown me out...now as far as embarrassing MYSELF with some of the raps and rants I have done...that's another thing... LOL.

You will be fine here. Sometimes I am pretty much mystified at what is considered politics or religion. I get reminded if I get too far out there though...

be well,
bri

Hi Scott, welcome!
It's really hard for us to guess what might be best for others, there are so many variables. A big one is your budget. Will you be staying mainly on public land or in RV parks? Will you be traveling and driving a lot or mainly staying in one spot and moving from time to time?

The one certainty is that the price of gas is going to keep going up, so my suggestion is to get either a Class C or Class A and tow a high mpg economy car. Another option is a late model van towing a travel trailer. Most of today's van can get close to 20 mpg when not towing so that isn't to bad.

As far as counseling in camp I don't think I have ever seen that. We all need friends and to talk to others but not formal counseling. Living this life is very healing, reducing the need for outside help!!

We are here to help so feel free to ask all the questions you have. But be sure to give us as many details as you can about your situation and ask as specific a question as possible.
Bob

Scott, I think you will find a motorhome or trailer will suit your needs quite well and will be very comfortable. There is always a need for teaching and spreading the message. In the long term BLM lands south of Quartzsite at the pavilion on Sunday morning different pastors give services when in town which are quite well attended. You will also find community outreach programs everywhere you go which can always use help. If you are qualified to counsel you will find no shortage of folks who would avail themselves of your services. The nomad life is not really that much different in that respect. I wish you well.

Thanks for all the replies....Bob...we are going to be on a tight budget. We are used to that being in ministry. I guess my biggest question is if we are going to mainly stay out west on public lands for free, would we be able to make it in a high top van or should we think something bigger like a class c. I have no desire or money for a class A. I want to be able to get to some out of the way places...so in my planning, should I even consider a van or van conversion, or should I think more like class C?

Hi Scott and Welcome!

As I read your post I was thinking "A Lazy Daze would be perfect."

Low and behold, the top item on the classified is a Lazy Daze. Take a look at this:

http://www.cheddaryeti.com/2013/01/31/lazy-daze-class-c-rv-for-sale/

I don't know anything about this particular rig but Lazy Daze has a remarkable reputation for quality.

Good Luck and Happy Trails!!

-- Kevin

Thanks for the thought and the heads up. Very thoughtful. I will check it out.
