Hello from Mesa, AZ. I lost my job in 2015 and haven't had steady full time work since. Decided to take early retirement at 62 and go nomadic. So many choices to make, so much to learn. This web site is just frickin' awesome. Thinking of getting a cargo van and outfitting it because trailers and motor homes are too expensive. Would like to visit the Slab City but not sure if the residents were forced off. Found many links saying it was in danger of being closed down but nothing definite. Anyone happen to know?

Welcome. Slab City is too hot now, that's a good winter area. Lots of us in the mountains in Utah, co, nm and as. If you are looking for a community to loosely travel with, you may find one here. There's a lot to learn and supportive members here. I took an early retirement as well. Can't be happier making the decision and living on the road and boondocking.
Cyndi will be on to point you to the relavent newcomer links here soon I'm sure. Go to http//:free camp sites.net to save money on places to live.

If you are intent on going to the slabs and wonder about the future of the place, contact Cornelius Vango through YouTube. Shes lived there full time and is pretty active in slab city matters. She just uploaded a new video today, and it appears slab city is still around.

I wil be picking up my van in Sept, and will be making a short trip down there before the beet harvest starts in mid Sept. Good luck and welcome. I lived in N PHX for 6 year's and dont miss the heat.

Welcome to the CRVL Forum :)

This life may be just what you need right now.  As you travel you may find other types of
employment that even suit you better.

If you take early retirement, have the Social Security people explain what happens if you
find another job and go back to work. (so you'll know and understand your options and what
SS will expect of you)  You may want to work-camp some as a nomad,  or you may luck into
a good paying job where you can still live out of your Van if you choose.

Once you go on the road,  you'll never know what opportunities that you may find,  and that's one of the
great benefits of this lifestyle.  You may actually find that you can create your own opportunities to some
extent.

Welcome to the CRVL forums Nomadicguy ! Sorry about the late "official welcome"! We usually spot new members fairly fast but somehow you slipped by.:-D

Slab City is alive and well. A group of forum members camped there for over a month earlier in the year. It's an interesting place but not the most scenic or relaxing. Freecampsites is very good site for finding a beautiful and quiet campsite.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.
