I'd heard of one in Seatle, and one in Portland, but I just found a list and there are a lot more hackerspaces than I'd realized. Generally, they are a place you can get together and work on things, and the group may own tools that most people couldn't afford. Some are in a member's garage, others have buildings with space to work on vehicles, mig welders, 3d printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, and so forth. Some specialize in electronics, art, or whatever. Prices range from free to a lot, and some are member only. While they tend to be in cities, not all cities have them. Anyway, if you are in need of a tool or help on a project, you may look in the list of hackerspaces to see if a nearby one is suitable.
