One of the hobbies I have is working with string or rope. It is simple to start; all you need is a piece of rope or a ball of good string or twine.
Sailors have been doing this for centuries.
You can put a Turk's Head on the end of your hatchet handle or a fine covering on a lug wrench. A way of adding craft to everyday things.
I heartily recommend this book, which is the one that got me started. The author has a very clear way of explaining things and the book also contains the best instructions I have seen of how to work an eye or splice rope. A junk piece of rope becomes very useful with an eye in one end.
-Bill-

edited to fix link
