I was messing with a length of 3-strand rope the other day trying to remember how I used to whip the end by back weaving it into itself. Couldn't make it come out the way I remembered it working.

Did some web searching and discovered nobody much does that anymore, evidently:

http://www.scouting.org.za/resources/pioneering/Whipping.pdf

http://andycamper.com/buildknots

Finally found something akin to it on WIKI:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_splice

But I still haven't figure out how I used to stop the unravel so's to begin the whip, or splice.

Jack that looks great! I usually use electrician's tape to keep ends in place while working the knot. Stretch it while putting it on then cut the rope through the taped area for a neat end, or use it to keep the rope from unravelling while you work the splice. Easily removed when the knot is done. If I am working string I use super glue for the end.
A knot that I use to temporarily whip the end is the constrictor knot. You would be surprised how tight you can get this knot. I use a piece of yarn from the rope.
-Bill-

CrazyBill: Good knot I don't recall ever seeing before. I'm going to do some practicing doing it in hopes I can recall how when the need arises.

I also like the superglue suggestion. Technology that comes later than other things too often doesn't get retrofitted into the current brainstorming.

I looked further on the site you linked and found the thing I was trying to remember the other day. Back splicing's what they're calling it.

http://www.animatedknots.com/backsp...ogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com

The 'crown knot' is the part I couldn't recall how to do.

Thanks amigo.

J
