One of the hobbies I have is working with string or rope. It is simple to start; all you need is a piece of rope or a ball of good string or twine.
Sailors have been doing this for centuries.
You can put a Turk's Head on the end of your hatchet handle or a fine covering on a lug wrench. A way of adding craft to everyday things.
I heartily recommend this book, which is the one that got me started. The author has a very clear way of explaining things and the book also contains the best instructions I have seen of how to work an eye or splice rope. A junk piece of rope becomes very useful with an eye in one end.
-Bill-

edited to fix link

That does sound like an interesting hobby. The last time I learned anything about knot tying was many years ago as a young man.

I was in the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, etc. and I recall earning some type of "Merit Badge" for learning how to tie quite a few different knots. It's been many years since I studied this ancient hobby that many seaman may still use today on a regular basis.

It was fun learning how to join two pieces of rope to make one longer piece if need be. I've got some paracord at home just lying around so maybe I'll try few knots later today.

You have an extra http// in that url

Cool stuff lampliter. I'm something of a gadget-freak my ownself and love seeing what others do. But it's worth a thread of its own. Otherwise the knot thread is going to look like a cats cradle if there's much posting to it.

Just saying

Hey, Jack

Here's a useful gadget... no sh**!

http://steampunkworkshop.com/diy-rv-macerator-pump

Bob

I'm impressed with the spirit of the thing from a strictly opportunistic perspective. But if I were the person who owned a 750-1250 gallon septic tank system being threatened with having 100 gallons of macerated sewage dumped into it I'd probably want to fire a shot across the bow of the RV doing the threatening.

Looks as though the knot thread is doomed to being a crossroads of esoteric subject-matter. Hope nobody in the alleged posterity connected with this site never wants to know anything about tying knots as a hobby-on-the-road.

Hey, Jack

I'm not against knots ... in fact I learned many years ago as a scout to tie many useful knots. It's just that knots are just a tool for me, not a hobby.

Bob

Hi Bill, I got the bug to learn some fancy ropework and bought a couple books on it...my interest is the stuff that the boatswain mates did on the ship and I never learned to do being busy in the galley all the time....they wrapped cables and handrails with it and there were turk's heads etc...I know a lot of knots already but nothing fancy....
If you are at the RTR we can compare notes....

I do agree with Jack that it would be cool if we could stay on topic for each thread but I tend to way off in the ozone plenty often meself...
Bri

Knots are pretty cool. At work we are required to know and use a few of them often (hitches, bowline). Being a fisherman for a lot of years has taught me many others. This seems like a useful and worthwhile hobby. Check this site out.

http://www.netknots.com/rope_knots/

Rollin, what a great link! Thanks for that...I love the animated part...that really helps...
Bri

Oops, posted one of my hobbies in the wrong thread.
Love knot tying and making stuff from cordage; very relaxing.

Those are great lampliter! We had a young couple at the last winter RTR Angelica and John who did much the same. Some of us bought bracelets from them....I did and I know SoulRaven did.
If you come to the RTR maybe you would sign up with Bob to put on a workshop on how to do them...
Bri

The book I referenced is the one that got me started. I saw a boat skipper doing it on a crew boat and he was doing it from this book. I found the book at a used book store and have spent many many hours since then. Of course this was all before the internet.
The book is aimed at mariners, which we all are in a manner. Google 'french spiral hitching'.
-Bill-

Bri;
If I get out that way would be happy to.
Never know where I'll be from one week to the next though.
Someone once said "We don't plan, we improvise".
