Have a 9yo ARB fridge, (maybe the best automotive accessories I've ever bought)
Question is does any one use there (what ever brand) as a freezer and swap water bottles between it and a cooler to get by. I've always kept a towel in the bottom to soak up moisture and would do the same in a cooler. I'd like to have at least a little long term freezer space and thoughts of a duel zone fridge seam to be a waist for me. How's this work for you?
Thanks

i have 3 Engels, i use one as a freezer. i do not freeze water for the sake of using the frozen water for ice in a cooler, that's very inefficient. you would be miles ahead as far as energy use just to get another one to use as a dedicated freezer. highdesertranger

I am surprised you have not yet run your own experiment with this during those 9 years. What is holding you back from trying it out?

Trying to wrap my mind around inefficient. Well yes I think it is too but I had different shade on it. Big fridge . Small fridge for freezer. Frigidaire table top ice maker. Use freezer to keep the ice and turn ice maker off.

Nope, I have two Whynter 65 qt units, one set up as a fridge and the other set at 0 F as a deep freeze.

Admit that the freezer is a bit of a power hog as compared to the fridge but that's the reality of keeping the unit at 0F as opposed to 40F.

Wouldn't have it any other way!!

the ice made in table top ice makers is not frozen solid to a state of being hard. It is soft, barely frozen, it melts quickly. It is OK in drinks but not suitable for use in an ice chest. You would have to be constantly making ice to keep up with how quickly it melts.

How old are the units and have you been happy with them? Did you consider a dual-zone?

It works for me. I use half gallon juice containers. Yeah, they don’t last as long as hard frozen ice but it works.

I use the $100 lifetime 55 quart premium cooler.

As with regular use, it works better when full - on both the freezer and cooler.
