A reminder that Father's Day is only a couple of weeks away, and that is traditionally a GREAT time to find tools on sale.  So clean out your toolbox, see what's broken or missing, and think about what you might like to ADD to your current collection that you don't already have.  Then check out Sears and other sources of tools for Father's Day sales.

I need to clean out my tool boxes, and make due with only one of everything. That might make my van another 200 lbs lighter.

I gave away most of my socket sets and bought a Craftsman pass through boxed set. I gave away most of my wrenches and bought a ratcheting set. That removed about 50 lbs...

Fathers day is a good time to buy the tools needed at 1/2 price.

I used to only buy Craftsman, but with Sears in trouble, I'm not sure I'd do that again. Someone told me that Harbor Freight still guaranteed their tools, just stay away from their electricals. I only have garage sale/estate sale mishmash now, and since I don't wrench much anymore, it will do.

If Sears goes under, Craftsman will survive. They spun that off already as a separate corporation with Sears holding company as the owner.

Follow the money. They are having problems because they were looted by various management.

Sears was doomed when they were bought by K-Mart, itself in financial straits. Craftsman tools aren't what they once were but still have the lifetime warranty.

My problem isn't getting good deals on tools.
It's getting rid of them.

I have however been able to kick my tool addiction!

I'm a Husky Home Depot man. Same lifetime warranty as Craftsman, but the stores are everywhere. I have all thier 1/2 chrome and impact sockets. They are tough as nails. Albiet, Im a shade tree wrencher. I have a 20v 400ft lb impact gun from Dewalt. Its a beast!

Amazon is a good place to shop for fathers day sales. They have save $20 off on any orders of $100 or more of Dewalt cordless tools. I'm gonna grab the 20v cordeless/corded wet-dry vac myself.

The only tool I have is a Leatherman Micra.

Is there anything in particular I should keep an eye out for?

Well, if you don't have a plasma arc torch for welding and cutting metal, I don't see HOW you can be a successful van dweller!

Seriously, Bitty, it's hard to make recommendations if you don't know how handy someone else is.

That said, EVERYONE living in a vehicle should at least have some screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench, and a pair of pliers or two.

Take a look at http://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Precis...sim_469_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=0594FPZF9GAJH3FPSM5H

A good assortment of not - particularly - expensive tools that will allow you, or a friend, to fix a lot of simple things when needed.

About the only real problem I see is that the wrenches are all American, not metric.  Useful in a house or apartment, but much less so on modern cars.

I'll throw a plug in for a cordless tool set, you know, the 18 volt combo kits with a small saw, light, drill, sawzall, that type.  Now with the Fathers Day sales, this is a good time for sure.  That way without ac power you can still make modifications to your rig.  Go online, search for HDepot or Lowes, type in your zip code for available stores, then type into their search box what you want. Shop till you drop...

It's a good time to purchase if you really need something though.  I do agree that one thing you do need is a good combination of wrenches, sockets/drivers, and screwdrivers.  $100 in tools vs. one shop labor (labour) hour at $100 from a stealership or garage... Even the simple all in one box 3/8 socket set with std and metric sockets, a few nut drivers, a few combo wrenches, pliers, wire cutter... Some of those are under $100, especially on sale.

I'll leave the tool accumulation to others, like my brother with the 3400 SF house and 3 car garage, who has nearly every tool known to man.  I think it's like an addiction and as a vandweller, it's fruitless.  The bulk, weight and the lack of working them (hey, that sounds like me!) isn't worth even a 50% bargain...  I'm so over that lifestyle!

Tool addiction is real , I know that for sure!
My quit day was when I had to downsize for my first Moho.
It really hurt to see all that expensive iron go out the door for pennies on the dollar.....

That said , I did keep some of the basic stuff mentioned already.

My advice is ,whenever you were trying to use the multi tool and found it not working just get what you need to do that job. (Borrowing should be an option too.)
Eventually you'll have a set of tools to match your capabilities to use them.

Now , the all in one tool kits do have a definite handy factor and this is a good time to find great deals on them , so go with your gut (and wallet) on if you want one.

good tools, like guns, gold, and silver hold there value real well. I have some snap on tools I bought in the 70's and 80's that I can get more for now then what I paid then. however if you adjust for inflation it's about the same price. highdesertranger

I've got a GORGEOUS Mac 1/2" drive socket set that I acquired back in the sixties.  Only problem is, it's SAE and these days, I gather, pretty near everything on cars and trucks is that damn foreign size stuff.

(grumbling and muttering-under-breath sounds)

for all your standard socket owners, many convert to metric. 1/2=13mm, 9/16=14mm, 11/16=17mm, 3/4=19mm. above 1inch pretty much close enough. highdesertranger
