So I just installed my first appliance but it's not working and I am trying to figure out why.

My battery management system isn't recognizing that I am charging my batteries when I plug it to shore power and instead tells me there is about 30A of power going to appliances instead even when no appliances were plugged in. When I plugged the fan in nothing happened. It's my first time, thanks for the help.

so lets get this out of the way,

are you in Australia?
the AC input on that BMS is 220v AC.
are you absolutely positive that you have the shunt hooked up correctly?

it's time to get the meter out and start taking readings.

I live in Canada so 110V. I saw people in the US use this bms with success. It seemed to be charging fine and delivering 30A of power like rated, it also showed that it fully charged the batteries as I had it plugged the week before without the fuse box and fan connected.

Shunt looks good, all negatives relayed onto negative side and ground to wall bolt.

ah ha that's what it is. the shunt is wired wrong I totally missed it the first time around.
one side of the shunt goes to the negative battery terminal, ALL other grounds go to the other shunt terminal.

Ok that makes sense. Now it is giving me a 0.1A load but fan is still not turning on. Guess I have to go get a meter and test whats going on.

So I bought a cheap motomaster multi-meter, put it to 12v option and started checking wires, nothing came up after checking just about every wire, but by the end of it I checked the battery monitor and now nothing works :( ughh...

By the way now that I think of it I think I bought the US model, so it should be a 110v bms.

If you put your meter on the battery posts, how many volts?

Since I tried using the multimeter it's as if I caused a short somewhere and now nothing turns on, no voltage anywhere.

it sounds like you blew the fuse in your meter. check it on a known good battery. this can be on any battery doesn't have to be a car battery. highdesertranger

I would guess you had it set on DC and checked the AC terminals which would blow the fuse. Meters need to be set above the voltage expected and for AC or DC. You can range it down after determining the voltage for a more precise measurement unless the meter is self ranging. Setting it for AC or DC is the most important setting.

I set it for 12v and only have 12v currently hooked up but just noticed it says it is rated for 10A and my bms load charge is 30A so it probably blew. Only problem is that my bms monitor is not functioning anymore either, am still trying to figure out why.

Until the voltage of the battery is confirmed there is nothing else to do. The voltage may be too low for your bms monitor to read?

The multimeter being rated for 10 amps has nothing to do with reading voltage. Red side to positive and black to negative (ground). The 10 amp rating is for measuring amps which is accomplished by breaking the circuit and putting the meter on the two connections in the amps setting.

what is the battery voltage? connect your meter straight to the battery and tell us what it says.

if you turn the meter on and no digits show you blew the fuse. it doesn't matter how you blew it. so replace the fuse in the meter then check the battery and tell us what it says.

You should have some small wires from you BMS that connect to those little screws. It will be in the documentation of your BMS.

Have you replaced the fuse in your meter yet or is the battery in it dead too?

Small wires like what? There are no wires that come out of the bms except those that you connect into the terminal slots.

The multimeter has not showed a reading since I got it, so wondering if it came broken since the package might have already been opened.

Try it on your engine battery, if it doesn't work there it sounds like it is broken.

Your BMS must not need a shunt so the screws are a mute point. I have three 20 gauge wires going to mine but I have a battery monitor by bogart engineering.
