I tried this and it works, not great but better than not being able to see and read.

It's the basic 'pin hole camera' effect, also used by us shooters using aperture rear sights.  The tiny hole brings clarity of vision and sometimes a slight perceived magnification.  Different sized apertures work better depending on the ambient light level.
The down side is a very narrow field of view, and losing peripheral vision.
