First they replaced wood-burning fireplaces with the fake log gas burners. Now, I stopped in a local library to find a computer monitor playing an endless loop video of burning wood inside the old fireplace, with crackling sounds coming from tinny speakers. If I had a camera with me I would post a picture, as it is kinda ridiculous looking.

The same people remark "Why waste gas traveling around, when you can drive around virtually on Google Street View?"

I can understand why the gas logs were replaced. I once worked at a Hotel. It had a gas log fireplace in the lobby. The guests loved it... along with the free freshly baked cookies. The hotel had a large room off the lobby they rented out for meetings and parties. One of the holiday parties spilled out into the lobby. It was mostly adults with a dozen kids. Some fool actually stick his hand in the fireplace and scorched himself trying to "prove" to his friends that the fireplace was a fake. You would think a grown man would know better. Started making "sue the hotel" noises and his friends ( & family) shut him down real fast by saying they would be glad to testify at the hearing... that he had been drinking and that I had told him twice the flames would burn him. As soon as I was done checking the guests in, I turned the gas logs off until the group left.

BTW, I like my fake log gas burners. No wood to split. No ash dust from one end to the other. No wood debris all over the place. No wet/icy/snowy wood to haul in. Been there, done that. Done with that.

you can do almost anything with virtual reality. I was in an interagency visitor center a couple of years back and they had virtual tours of the National Parks. just think about it visit all the big parks in one day no bugs, no bears, no wind, perfect climate controlled atmosphere. what more can one ask for. jeez give me a break. I was disgusted. highdesertranger

I love gas logs, press a button and presto, instant flame and heat.  No ash, no kindling, no splitting/hauling in wet wood and best of all..... no smoke and smell.  With some, the flue can even be left closed so all the heat doesn't go up the chimney.

The electronic ones on a monitor are great if there are little ones running around.  One of my neighbors uses that for parties where sometimes it gets a little wild (did I just write that down for posterity???).  Reading between the lines means there is someone there that "always" makes a fool out of themselves and he has to be protected from himself the best we can......and no, it is not me :D
