Hi all,
My name is Alia and I am new to the site.
I am thinking about purchasing and living in a van with my 2 daughters six months from now.
My question is about providing electricity in a van which I will not be using to travel, it will be stationary and parked on a friends property.
First of all I should say I know very little about any of this.
If there is already a thread that addresses this issue I apologize for taking up more space.
If that is the case please do refer me to that thread.
From the research that I've done, it seems that electricity is generally provided by the battery which is charged in a running vehicle.
But, as I said I don't plan on driving the vehicle around, just living in it.
I would like to be able to power a small refrigerator, small electric stove/oven,some lights, a desktop computer, charge my phone etc. Is this even possible without generating power by driving the car around?
Perhaps I should include that I'm able to spend $700 a month on "utilities"
Obviously I am looking for a total van conversion.
Is there a way to accomplish this without driving the vehicle around?
What a generator work and if so how much do they cost, how big of a generator what I need?
I feel I should probably have more questions but don't even know what they are, lol
Any advice or starting point would be much appreciated.
Thanks very much.

Hi Alia, and welcome to the group! I guess the obvious question is will your friend let you plug into his/her electricity? If so it is very simple, just get a long extension cord (at least 12 gauge)and run it from the house to the van. I would then drill a hole through the floor and pull the plug through. Plug a power strip into it and you are done.

If you can't use their electricity you only have two choices, a Honda 2000 generator or solar power. Will your friend let you run a generator? Are you in an area where Solar power is a viable option. Where are you going to be? How will you stay cool and warm?

A Honda 2000 will run everything you want, including a window air conditioner. It is quiet, extremely reliable and is very fuel efficient. You can get one for about $1000. You can buy cheaper generators but they will be loud, suck gas and break often. You get what you pay for.

Give us more information and we can be more helpful.
Bob

welcome Alia. You picked a rough road. We will all try to help. Specific questions will get the best answers. Once you get past the beginning it is easier. Hoping you can plug into electric and water.
