I get it if you get ALL your content via card you are limited in your bandwidth ? There are some a lot I am betting that go to the Gym PLNT and use their internet, they go to the library, McD , BK , Home Depot, Lowes, Coffee shop so many places offer free wifi these days. I understand there are some that stay in the boon-docking orbit but even when you are out there you still gotta go to town get water or food?

How many actually stay at their camp 14 days not going into town for a thing? And if somebody views a video finds it worth watching wouldn't they give it a like? Now if the administrators are using just card data then I get it but if they are doing this maybe it would be wise to delegate the moderation to folks that have unlimited data.

Not at all trying to rock the boat just wish to get an accurate representation of the needs here.

Well I have more or less unlimited at my home sticks and bricks, but when traveling I'm on limited cellular data, so I either avoid clicking on videos, or I watch them in low resolution.

Of course when I borrow a cup of WiFi somewhere, at McDonalds or WalMart, I will watch videos but not do any banking or financial transactions, unless the http is https...then you are pretty secure.

Of course, everyone has a different situation.

I suspect the moderators here are volunteers who have the time and the desire, and that probably is just as much, or maybe MORE important, than the amount of data they have available as they go about their daily lives.

I could be wrong...I'm sure someone will step in.

I rarely use public wifi even if I'm sitting right in front of a place that has it.

It's an extremely rare day that I eat fast food and to just sit in their parking lot, not only taking up a parking space meant for a paying customer but then using their wifi as well --- well it just seems wrong to me...most like stealing. They are paying for that wifi and the parking lot. So we can cross those off the list for me.

If I'm in a big box parking lot like W/M I'm most often found on the far outreaches of their lot and the wifi service out there is either non-existent or slower than molasses.

I pay for what I can afford and limit myself to what I pay for. Here in Canada because of the ghastly prices, it's half of what I have in the winter when I'm in the US. There, I can actually watch a few videos but they have to be really interesting for me to watch them all the way through. Most of the YouTube videos I click on I close after a minute or two because of quality issues - sound, topic and/or the poor speech habits of the speaker being the main sore spots.

We will always make this forum available to those with either low bandwidth or limited data.  Check out Bob Well's (the site's owner) stated vision here -- https://vanlivingforum.com/Thread-The-Rules-of-the-Forum-February-2014

He says in part:
This is my vision for us:

1) To teach people (especially people in need) how to be reasonably comfortable living in their car, van or RV.
2) To inspire others to follow their dreams and live mobile. We’re specifically oriented towards living cheaply and most often in vans, but all are welcome. Vandwelling is an attitude and not a choice of vehicle or residence.
3) To create a tribal community of like-minded people to support and care for each other.

After all, this is *Cheap* RV Living.

And Big Kudos to our volunteer admins and mods for all they do for our community here, even when they have less than ideal Internet access.

I'm in my mother's house at the moment, living in the early 80s. No cable, no internet. I do use public wifi to d/l movies and shows. I don't spend much time doing anything else on public wifi

If I am on the road, I move about every week or two because I have to go to town. I definitely don't move just to get internet. And i stay put as long as possible.

I get all my wifi from whatever source I can find it. Malls, McDs, library, wherever. I use it to upload photos and manuscripts for my job.

I don't watch vids online--I download them as mp4s and watch them later offline.

Your way makes the most sense I wish I knew how to do things like that? I sure wish I had a lot of the videos I have seen saved like you did? I usually put them in my favorites on YT but when a channel is deleted their video goes with and some of their videos are ideal learning instruments.

Understood that they wish to conserve bandwidth just that in order to make it easier on those in BWD a bandwidth desert.  I just wish to share that if you are BWD then you check your e mail and other things only with your paid service and all entertainment value media such as this you save for when you are with good BW. We don't try to violate rules but getting a mushroom stamp for something that is a non issue does seem uncalled for.

The way they explained it to me was Rule #1 the world is not fair Rule #2  don't like that see rule #1. This subject is like trying to bail out the ocean with a tablespoon? To say no politics then to push a communists agenda is not a world with no politics it is a oxymoron. I will have peace if I have to fight for it? Can't we all get along? Sure Rodney after you stop using angel dust and running from the police? Nope life is not fair and for some it is brutal becasue they were stupid. Myself included I can speak as an expert because I am guilty of some stupid stuff I got lucky got a grip the last time I was in dire straights and decided never again and made some radical changes. More like the changes in possum living but I did not do all the farming and the fishing or conserve electric as much . I just act my wage is all.  I will do what I can to be BW conservative and explain as best I can all I can to prevent somebody that is in BWD from using their limited resource . If you are BWD don't click on links until you are out the BWD.

There are a few different free youtube downloaders available that let you put YT vids on your hard drive as an mp4 format. Just do a Google for "free youtube downloader"/

I avoid McD food but was going there because of their wifi... lately in some McDs seems they do not allow https... therefore not going there again. The only thing that was pulling me to eat therr was their wifi, I guess good for me they are not allowing https, can now avoid their "food"

 I'm older than dirt.  I have 8 Grandkids from 4ys to 19ys.  None of us know what a "mushroom stamp" is.  Unless it's a reference to Bull Shit, which being from TX I'm very familiar with in many forms and fashions.  I believe growing mushrooms may be one of them?

So what is a mushroom stamp?   Please.

I've never tried a Youtube download but that's a great idea.  Just googled and here's an article about downloading youtube videos and reviews 5 different free download programs.
If anyone has one they like let us know.

I use the YTD downloader.

Mostly I download science, nature and history documentaries from Doscovery Channel and Smithsonian. The great thing about getting one's TV from YouTube is that one can get some very good docs from British, Chinese, Arabic, German, Japanese and French TV.

Yeah, I don't know what the "mushroom" thing is either (OK, I looked it up, but I'm not putting anything like that in my post), but neither do I really understand what is being discussed. The mods do a great job here of keeping up as far as I am concerned. I belong to 3 or 4 other forums, people sitting in a room with their wifi as mods, and I don't see any difference here. The mods have always been VERY responsive to any issue that I had. I think it is one of those "it doesn't matter what you have, but what you do with what you have" situations.

I like nature and it is my intention to spend my time looking at that, along with Bob's youtube channel, of course!

So, the issue has just totally went over my head or under my feet, somewhere.

Some youtube videos have a download button right on the page.

But I have only downloaded a few, its rare for me to see one that I want see again and again....unless its a Fleetwood Mac or Bob Seger music video.

How does downloading videos relate to how much internet access admin/mods have? Still confused.

I think the connection is that the moderators may want to be able to see a video that is linked, to make sure its appropriate, or not, and to do that, they need to be able to view it.

A moderator on limited download plans or limited bandwidth might have to view dozens of videos per day, and this could cause issues.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for explaining the connection. I am guessing, but for the most part, the forums that I go to all have the report button, and members tend to use that to "oversee" other members who might be trying to stretch the rules. On another forum, I have reported many a link, video or otherwise, that did not comply, large forum and am a long time member there. Yes, I am a "tattle tail".

If you don't understand then you have not had been chastised for not chopping off the comments and all that stuff that causes people to have to scroll around to see what the heck anybody is talking about. Like this comment where I deleted the comment you made and sent my reply. I am complying with what I have been told to do  so in that way I am being righteous but others have to go read all the comments you made to try and figure out what I am trying to reply to. When I am in the bush I just don't bother using the web  I just wait till I am out the BWD Bandwidth desert.
