Thanks so much Jack. I haven't had time to find it yet on your blog but will tomorrow.
Dragonfly

What about kickin it up on Amazon yourself as an Ebook? doesnt look like a very involved process.

NEMO: It's out there free, now. It was on Amazon several years ago as an ebook and there wasn't enough interest to justify keeping it there. I've got a couple of books in print listed on Amazon, been there close to a decade, and they sell a few every month. But the Desert Survival tome never sold a single copy as an ebook.

After I took it down from Amazon I did the rewrite and expanded it a lot, submitted it to an established publishing house as a proposed book-in-print. They accepted it conditional upon me expanding certain sections, rewriting or eliminating others. But when it was ready for contract discussions we discovered we couldn't agree about advance and royalties.

I'm tired of messing with it. The book is a piece of my past I don't want to devote any more energy to.

Jack, I read your book and I have to say what a great piece of work it is. It is very generous for you to release it as you did. It is very well thought out and very readable.
I was especially happy to see you devote that much space to the use of a mirror as a signal device. I was, at one time, a helicopter pilot and flew three years in Alaska. I can tell you from first hand experience what an effective device the simple mirror is. 10 miles is easy for a mirror and 20 miles is very doable on a sunny day. I always made sure that anyone I dropped off in 'the wild' had one and many times it led me right to their location.
I do believe that the person who would read your book and follow your advice on preparation probably isn't the sort of person who would be caught unawares in the desert anyway, but you never know...
When I learned how to start a fire with a bow and drill someone told me that the person who learns how to do it that way will probably never forget his matches again. That certainly was the case for me. All my vehicles now have Bic lighters stashed all over them.
Anyway, I am wandering and just wanted to tell you how much I liked your book and thank you again for putting it out.
-Bill-

jack, i aiso enjoy the read, thank you.as a sailor a mirror is one of the main safety devises you can have onboard a ship at sea. can't see way it didn't sale? fellow traveler, gary

Wow Thanks for this, always enjoy these types of reads

Thanks for the reads and kind words folks. Good to think the thing gets a reading now and then to keep the dust from settling on the electrons.

As my departing date nears I'm staying fairly busy at the moment and my online time involving discussion boards and groups is focused more on those where my specific issues are more frequently discussed, mechanical matters, various RV issues, travel issues in the locations where I'm likely to be. I'm subscribed to a number of threads here, though, and when I check in I always click NEW POSTS for a look and lurk at what's going on.

Thanks again compadres. Here's hoping we meet sometime where the smell of pines or the odor of sage provides a background for the taste of coffee.

Best to all of you.

Just what I've been looking for - thank you so much!

Outstanding! Better in many ways than my SAS Survival Handbook. How can I get it onto my kindle?

Thanks for sharing, it was as mockturtle says, Outstanding! I also wanted it for my kindle, would it be ok with you if we convert it to .mobi format? I have a program that I found for free download that I use to convert html files to kindle format for later reading when off the net. This would be perfect for that. I did read the whole thing though and I think I remember a lot of it (even found the compass at amazon or something almost exactly like your pictures) but it would be also nice to be able to read it again offline. Thanks again.

Blueberry's formatted the book for whatchallit and probably wouldn't mind sharing it with you. Thanks Lorraine.

The book is in the public domain. I claim no ownership other than authoring it. I've no objection whatever anyone might do with it henceforth.

Gracias, Jack

Edit: Anyone who's converted it who has an interest in doing so and a fast connection could upload it to a dropbox.com folder and post a sharing link. https://www.dropbox.com/home#!/home

Afterward anyone who wants the book to read offline would only have to click the link to download it.

I honestly don't have the time to spare at this stage of my life.

Gracias,

Oh, thanks Star. I didn't see Jack's message about my .mobi version. Doesn't matter, I'm just glad to see it's available for us Kindlezens.

Hi highdesertranger: I was with Emergency Management Planning and Coordination almost through the 1990s. Took my retirement Jan 1, 1999. I worked some with a Bennie Chaves from the State Engineers office some, but I don't think he was a PHD. Engineer specialized in hydraulogy...dam safety at the time. But I don't recall ever knowing his educational level.

My main dealings with Department of Transportation engineers involved damage to State Highways after the Gila flood, a few bad snow storms, and quite a lot on the bridge over the channel where the the Puerco River and highway up toward Cuba intersect. The Puerco channel there's widening and deepening so rapidly getting a bridge across it with any hope of duration of service was a considerable problem.

I knew a lot of folks carrying the surname Chavez over the years, but probably not the one you're referring to.
