I will be leaving Colorado to drive down to Texas to pick up my truck camper and then driving out East to visit my family. After that I will drive back to Colorado. I would like to know what advice posters can share on driving a cross country trip in a camper.

I just wanted to say Have Fun! Cause I can't think of a better route than the one you have - as good but not better.  ;)

Be done with driving for the day at 4:00 pm to get settled into a campsite before sundown/darkness.

This will allow you to fix/find some dinner, and have a restful night before leaving early the next morning.

It's pretty much like driving anywhere in your camper, only farther. :D

Make sure the seller shows you ALL the systems before you leave with your new camper. Go to the manufacturer's website or YouTube and familiarize yourself with the camper before you go and pick it up. Make a list of things to pay special attention to (holding tanks, water fill, dumping, for instance).

Reason I'm saying this: it's what I wish I had done better at when I bought mine!

Truck campers are great. You can overnight in truck stop restaurant parking lots, or the Crackerbarrel. Nobody will come knocking on your door, as long as you ask permission from the manager. It also helps to leave a receipt from the restaurant on your dashboard so the security peeps know you're a legit customer.

The Dire Wolfess

My first RV I was giving an orientation of how the RV operates but had to leave it there for about a month because I had no where to store it. When I finally picked it up and took it camping for the first time I went to set up the rv and realized I had forgotten most of what the rv tech told me. When I pick up my camper this time I am going to use it right away.

Keep to no more than 4-5 hours driving a day, and definitely make time to stop and smell the roses, see what there is to see...

I will be traveling over 4000 miles and will have about a month to do it. I will also be visiting different family members at different locations so I will have to drive more than 4-5 hours a day to do this trip.

When you do the orientation at time of pickup, take a small notebook to make notes as you go about how to do this or that, as it will help when you actually are on your own.

Any time you stay in a campground, you will find lots of helpful others who can answer questions and guide you with unfamiliar systems.

Have fun!
