What is the list of clothing items that people pack for a year? As example:

5 pants
5 button shirts
5 shorts
5 undergarments
5 pair socks
3 shoe-sneakers
1 winter coat
1 wool hat
1 pair gloves

We're currently working on that one ourselves lol. Some of our thoughts:

A layering system of cold weather clothing, where each layer does double duty. Three layers - a wind proof windbreaker for the outer layer - should cover most situations. No need for one heavy coat if the layers suffice, I would think.

For footwear, maybe make one of those shoes a pair of water proof boots?

Oh good, this is something I've been trying to figure out myself for a while now. Since I wasn't sure I've been whittling down what I own to what I prefer to wear with respect to the seasons.

3 pair jeans
2 pair cargo pants
2 pair shorts
10 boxers
9 pair white crew socks
3 pair smart wool socks
2 pair vibram socks
12 boxers
1 set thermals
12 t's
3 long sleeve t's
1 windbreaker
1 wool lined winter coat

Most of it barely takes up any room so space isn't an issue. I'm trying to work out what I'll might need versus not need when the time comes.

offroad- why a year? any specific reason? curious cause i recently bookmarked a blog about that, some world traveler. which of course got me thinkin :)

here's what i currently have downsized to, this is all the clothing i own, and may downsize more:

2 pair jeans
2 pair trail pants (zip off to shorts)
1 macabi skirt (converts to pants and shorts)
2 L/S wool zip-T's
2 pair long john bottoms
4 sleeveless tank tops
2 bras
3 underwear
4 pair wool socks
1 packable winter coat
1 sundress
2 buffs (1 wool and 1 microfiber)
1 pair teva sandals
1 pair hiking boots
1 pair moosehide mukluks
1 pair flip-flops for public showers

1 thin wool shawl (multi-use)
1 cotton sarong (doubles as towel)

thoughts:
obviously, i depend on layering. wool stuff does not get stinky like some clothes, can wear more than once. i wash what i take off as soon as possible. access to water may influence this list when i am on the road. everything is lightweight and dries quickly. (my son said "my mothers idea of fashion is if she can dry her clothes on a bush") i am always on watch for good prices on these "usually" more expensive items, but guarantee you i spend less than most people on clothes.

i think i covered everything.

I don't go and count my stuff but, as a general rule, I have TONS of socks and underwear, pile of t-shirts, 6 pairs or so of relaxed fit jeans, coupla overalls, some BDU's for the bush, wool army pants for winter walking, 4 pairs wool army sweaters, oilskin duster and bomber, oilskin hat, Gore-Tex shell (was given to me), toque. Dunno what else.
I like to do my laundry maybe once every 2 months or so and in 1 big pile to save on money/time. This also allows me to stay out in the bush much longer. ..Willy.

twoknives - a year is when things can wear out and need replacing, or when you come off the road back to apartment-home ownership living. So just through that out there to think of all the seasons that you need clothing for. Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer.

Well I definitely have to many clothes!

Socks way too many, as I child this was my fetish! ( in my YMCA, spa, gym bag)

Oh my goodness, I am embarrassed to admit how much I have. No way i will post a list. I am with Willy, I have enough to only do laundry once every month or two. At least 30 pair of tidy-wihities. I keep worn out pants to paint and go under the rig in.

Having lived in Alaska all my life I seem to have an obsession with cold-weather gear. Way too much!! Even worse, I am still collecting more!

Of course I agree totally with less is more principle, just not able to live up to it. Bob

sl1966, only 22 pairs of boxers? What are you thinking, you'll need at least 40! :&gt

Doesn't everybody just wear them till they wear out, then buy a new pair. What's with all the washing. Just turn inside out.

Time to get them eyes of yours checked, I don't own that many.

Steve darling you put 10 boxers then on another line you put 12.....what are you trying to pull here? JK of course. Maybe!!

Where the wind blows I also like those diabetic socks. Very roomy!!

Well since I am not moving around and job camping soon...hopefully VERY soon I can rent a small storage room out so I dont need to limit clothing. But I really dont own a lot anyway. Not 22 boxers like Steve. Wait, I don't have any boxers!!

IMO, the key is underwear (maybe Sartre said it first?). That dictates how long one can go between laundering.

Socks are a close 2nd.

Another consideration is what I call "Levi's Rule": blue jeans don't get dirty.

Frequent changing of socks ensure that your footwear doesn't smell like something crawled in and died. I generally wear my sox for 2 days and then into the laundry heap; 3 is the maximum. ..Willy.

Oh I see it now. Sorry Owl, your eyes are fine. The second set of boxers was supposed to be T's as you can see in a few lines below. I was typing that up at work and was interrupted. I need to do a little more QA on my posts when that happens.

I'm not on the road yet, but I don't expect my wardrobe to change much. I may need some more cold-weather items, but I think this is good to start with.

5 bike shorts for hot weather
5 leggings for cool weather
1 pair jeans
1 pair dress pants
5 tees
4 sweaters
1 long sweater dress
9 pairs cotton socks
2 bras
1 pair walking shoes
1 pair slip-ons
1 windbreaker
1 heavy jacket

We're with Willy and Bob - underwear and socks determine how often you have to go to the laundromat. We have about three weeks worth. They hardly take up any room and can be stuffed into any spare space. Then about five pairs of pants , shorts and outer shirts that can be worn for three or four days before they get grungy. Add some sweatshirts , a light jacket , a heavy jacket , hats , gloves and scarfs and we're ready for any weather. That's just the basics -like most everyone else we have too many clothes that we carry around and don't really wear. lol!
