I also have the police ask me many times , who else is in the back of the van?
I think this comes from a tv stereotype. 
For example there's many many movies with a group of people in back of a van going around doing crimes or other activities. 
Just one example ,,The movie Point Break   , a bunch of bank robbers riding around in a van  robbing banks

100% agree with Luciano, there is no good reason (fear is not a good reason) to answer a knock and there is NOTHING the police can do to either you or your vehicle (as long as it is legally parked). I am not police-bashing, I'm just re-affirming the facts.
