I was wondering if any of you have had occasion to get chiropractic care while on the road.

I fell out of a tree a couple years ago. Yeah, I know, at my age....what was I thinking? Anyhow, I have a great chiropractor who taught me exercises to keep things pretty mobile and pain free if I am diligent about stretching and get an occasional adjustment of the cervical area where the compressed discs are.

I am recuperating from a road trip without chiropractic adjustment. My chiro doc is struggling to loosen the knots in my shoulders just so she can adjust my neck. She says I need to find a way to keep things loose enough there. The problem is I can't just walk into a chiropractors office and get an adjustment. You have to do an initial intake which usually costs at least 80 bucks, usually more.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and how you solved it.

My doc said I'm not likely to find someone willing to take the risk. A massage therapist can run $60 around here. It may be less for just a shoulder/ neck only. My only concern would be finding the right kind of therapist, ya know?

I feel your pain and your need for treatment on the road. Some alternatives when no Chiropractor is available is essential oils. "Young Living" and "DoTerra" are reputable companies that have excellent products. Essential oils not only relieve discomfort but they help the body heal from the inside out and are used to promote homeostasis which is balance in the body. This weekend I've been using Deep Blue and Peppermint from DoTerra along with Generic Excedrin Migraine to relieve pain between my shoulders that cause migraines. I am amazed at its effectiveness. Together they worked terrific. My pain was an 7/10 in my head and shoulders and then went to 3/10 after half hour and now is totally gone after 4 hours. Usuallly it lasts all day. The $200 script for 8 pills from the Doc doesn't even come close to this kind of effectiveness.

As I become familiar with the oils and experience their true potential, I'll let you all know if they are effective in other ways. I know for infections, you can't beat them. They've been around for 1,000's of years. Don't take my word for it. Google it and read up on it. DoTerra has better teaching on essential oils (I like their smell better too) then Young Living but both are safe for internal use and are NOT synthetic. The cheap stuff in the store is synthetic and not effective.

I have chronic back pain that was controlled with Chiropractic care, but she moved! I've tried a few chiropractors but they don't seem to have her touch. I've been to several in other cities that were good too, but just can't seem to find one I like here. I know there is a good one here, but its expensive to keep paying for the initial visit. Until then I will continue to use essential oils to control my pain. Good luck in finding what works for you.

Rae

@ Rae....FYI.

I have pretty severe degenerative disc disease in my c-spine and when I was employed as a mechanic at KNWR in Soldotna I had enormous pain in my upper back and tried absolutely everything that was available from regular docs to chiros to physical therapy, etc. in the Soldotna/Kenai area. The only relief I could get other than drugs (could not use drugs due to operating tools and equipment at work) was an acupuncturist....

Karlene Muller is an amazing acupuncturist the likes of whom I have never again visited.....she could eliminate the pain with two visits and I would be good for a couple months....

http://www.karlenesdayspa.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=33&Itemid=70

I am not suggesting that this is something for you but just another resource in your area that you may well know about........

I had my right arm become paralyzed from the disease and had to have a three level discectomy since then and I am in pretty good condition these days except for the permanent nerve damage and muscle loss in my arms...luckily I have little to no pain.

Good health,
Bri

Yup Bri. I see Karlene as well. Her office is across from the hospital entrance now. She is very well liked by everyone here. She's very helpful to me. How long has it been since you lived here?

Rae

Oh interesting...say hi for me...I noticed that she had moved when I looked her up online to make sure she was still in business. I used to see her in her early days of business out on K-beach road.

I believe it was 1997 when we sold our Sterling cabin and moved south.

I had my neck operated on in 2002 while recovering radiation from a second flare up of prostate cancer.

Health,
Bri

Thanks for the responses. Your shared experiences give me food for thought.

Rae, I discussed the essential oils with my doc and she supports that 100%. I'll be doing some more reading soon, and will let you know. Please keep me updated with your experiences. Thank-you!

Travelfriend, how did you choose a massage therapist? I don't want one of those X rated places.

My first time replaying to a post, but here goes, this is what Ido.
I use a tennis ball, lay on my back in bed or some soft surface and, for example, if I have sore tight shoulders, I put the tennis ball up under my shoulder and lay on it for 10-15 seconds and then lean up a little and move the ball half an inch or so and lay on it again. This is for sore muscles DO NOT USE ANY WHERE ON THE SPINE!!!
I also use this, laying on my side in bed with a pillow for my head, for the outside of my knees or put the ball between my knees and use my top legto press into the bottom leg for more pressure. Sometimes, if my bicep is sore, I put the ball against my arm and lean up against a wall. I don't generally move my body around, I will place the ball where I want it and then move it again with my hand to a different place usually it is a very small move.
Keep in mind that muscle moves bones.
If you have medical issues, check with your doctor before doing any sort of self-massage.
There is a book called, Body Rolling that explains this well.

JJ, I do this, too. It really helps. I will place the ball very close to the spine and lie back onto the ball very carefully. I move it from one pressure point to the next just as you describe. I'm glad you posted this, because I have been having back pain lately and had forgotten about this technique. I will do this when I get home from work this evening. Thanks!

I had a friend who used to use Gravity Boots and would hang up side down on a steel bar. He swore it stretched him enough so he wouldn't have to go see a Chiropractor. He was also 6'4" tall and I think it stretched him a little bit over the years too. His two Brothers were only 6 feet or so. Another thing that might work for you is the torture rack used in Medieval times by the Inquisition.
