I've not yet begun my travels.. but when i do which i intend on being much sooner than later.. the question of making side money has occurred to me A LOT.. I'm on a fixed government income of 700 dollars a month (SSI max federal limit).. and 170 in food stamps.. now that isn't SO bad.. but i'd like to at least make 1000 a month while on the road (not including the food stamps). <br /><br />so my idea is to sell food out of my truck. I would more than likely make things like home made lemonade, hamburgers, hotdogs, home made breakfast tacos and normal tacos. and maybe get those little value packs of bags of chips and sell those. and maybe even cases of soda and water. i even thought of making the outside of my vehicle a little eating area when i stop at places that have other dwellers / campers so that i could have maybe some of those card tables folded out and invite people over for some breakfast, lunch or dinner.... i don't think I'd charge much maybe 4 dollars for an entire meal.&nbsp; (WHICH WILL BE WAY BETTER TASTING THAN MCDONALDS,&nbsp; i figure even if i did this intermittently or just at big camp spots where people are it wouldn't be a bad idea. i dont intend it to be a monthly income or weekly or even daily.. but it would be cool to make a little bit if anything.. i could even&nbsp; do it for barter/trade situations (cooking that is) <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle">&nbsp;
 
Good luck may i ask where you plan to do this? I know selling canned or bottled drinks is easy but food needs permits ect lots of action in Fl. in the fall andd winter and livingcan be cheap I'm from there.
 
well i was an ice cream man a year ago and we had to have a business license for each town we were distributing.. and theres this link with some info on more private selling of food, etc.<br />www.foodsmart.govt.nz/producing-food-for-sale/starting-food-business/getting-started.htm<br /><br />and well, my goal isn't to live off this money, if i did decide to do this it would be at events or bigger gatherings of fellow dwellers.. such as in AZ, or wherever there will be a meet up of a bunch of us. so what I'd do is call those cities, ask how i can go about selling my food , and just get the few licenses i would need. I'm fairly certain its inexpensive.. <br /><br />aside from that, i'll probably always carry some chips and store bought items to sell out of my van for very cheap just to maybe have a little extra spending money here and there. <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle"> Also i have no real intention of going to florida. no offence..<img src="/images/boards/smilies/tongue.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle"> but i think most of my travels will be between chicago ,&nbsp; new york, as far south as virginia, then to new mexico, nevada, arizona, california,.&nbsp; i dont really want to deal with snow so i wont be dealing with most of the northwest either or midwest and i would probably only plan to sell food in arizona, new mexico,&nbsp; and nevada. those are just guesstimates. <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle"><br /><br />
 
One of my patients (I'm a home care nures) has a side business where he and his wife do Kettle Corn sales from a small enclosed trailor during minor community events such as grand openings or anniversaries for businesses, town celebration days, rodeos, etc.&nbsp; They purchased the set up used and make a prety good profit.&nbsp; Doesn't have to be Kettle Corn as I see a hotdog vendor in a stepvan running around as well.&nbsp; Each area will have their own legality hoops to jump through but they may not be difficult.&nbsp; Go to the borough, county or city offices to find out what their rules. are.&nbsp; I see vendors setting up in parking lots during busy tourist seasons like red salmon dipnetting here on the Kenai.&nbsp; Be creative and smart and you can do it.&nbsp;<br />Rae
 
I have owned a few got dog carts in the past. If you want to be legal there are permits, health department inspectipns and of course taxes. Also there is the problem with keeping your food cold or hot. You will also need to store all your cookers, coolers, buns, meats and lots of other stuff. You also need a place to wash all your pots, pans and utensils. I hate to be downer but its not an easy thing to do. If your living in the van you will already be cramped for space. Plus if your thinking about stealth camping you will be drawing lots of attention to yourself. Plus people might be turned off by some guy selling food out of the back of his van. I think it could be done but there is alot to think about.
 
hahah well this got taken to a whole new level that i didn't expect. i was just trying to sell a couple hotdogs i made. not to 400 people. you know, but maybe like 20 some people on any given day and once I'm out, I'm just out. i didn't intend on needing all those cookers and what not .. i was just going to be the "hey i know this guy who sells a pretty good cheeseburger/hotdog" guy and a random few people would come up to me. BUT .. that doesn't mean i haven't considered these other ideas.. for a larger set up. and doing it more seriously. And no i didn't really intend on stealth camping. i want to stay in national parks, and probably even traveling to peoples places i know across the country.&nbsp; <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle"><br /><br />John
