Wondering if anyone has tried a wood stove in a class c? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated!

I’d love to put a wood stove in my rig, it’s totally do-able! The mini wood stoves for rv’s or boats are so CUTE!!

I extensively used a stove/fireplace when growing up - and still use one in my place in Colorado.  While they are romantic, they are also rather messy.

You have to dispose of the ashes and deal with creosote buildup.  Both of these are really messy operations and if not done regularly can result in a fire hazard.  Ash disposal in a stove is especially messy since more often than not the ashes remain in the firebox and are not easily removed.

Romantic, but really messy to maintain.

Also getting ashes cool enough to dispose of sometimes requires days if you have let them build up. Putting them in an air tight metal can help keep things from catching on fire. Take my word for it you don't want to dump the ashes on a windy day and be sure to bury them to be safe.

Yes running and maintaining wood stoves require foresight and a lot of work. I also grew up with wood heat so that aspect does not intimidate me.
If you can harvest your own wood then it’s better, and since we are in rvs we need a steady dry supply from the outdoors or we need to store it. Most of us don’t have the space to store wood, so we need to make sure we aren’t havesting wood fuel illegally where we are boondocking. To purchase Small amounts for campfires fires is outrageously expensive where I’m from, so purchasing wood isn’t really an option.

The access to wood fuel is the reason I’m holding off on a wood stove. I’ll start with better bedding and move up from there.

From my younger backpacking days with wood fires, I have always presumed that it would be a logistical nightmare getting enough wood for a stove in a van or RV, especially if one is urban......

I used to empty the Post Office trash can and got enough shinny junk mail to roll paper logs to heat my house for most of the winter once but it took too much space and labor when the fun wore off.

I can't post a link yet, but if you go to Youtube and search "Stuck in South Dakota | Staying Warm With a Wood Stove", there is a couple in a school bus using a Grizzly cubic mini stove. As of today, the video is less than a week old. There are some interesting comments on the video too, like one person mentioned using bbq briquettes for a longer overnight burn time.

And that means a day or so with no heat...

I have a woodstove in my small S&B, on a hearth in the living room, and the primary heat source when I am at home.

I like the idea of a tiny one in an RV, and others do it, but for several reasons it’s hard for me to imagine these used in a rig that is moved often.

And, you not only have to have a steady source of dry wood but something to cut it down to fit.

When you have to remove hot ash, you use an unpainted metal pail.

Set it outside til it cools.

My neighbor heats her S&B with a wood stove for pretty much nothing all winter long, and plenty of spring and fall if she feels like it. And it's a three-story house!

The trouble is well worth it to her. Her neighbors can spend quite a lot more to heat much smaller houses.

We heated this 2600 sf house with wood, in a kitchen stove exactly like the one on the Walton's TV program.  At night we changed to coal so it would burn longer w/o getting up to feed her.

Her name was Phoebe, like the character in the House of Seven Gables, who brought warmth to the house.

Sadly we got old, and had an oil boiler installed.

The kids and I still miss Phoebe. :(

Yes, that's very good.

Where are you going to be this winter? How cold is it going to get there ?

Sorry for the slow reply. We will be in Tennessee for the winter. Not a lot of snow but definitely gets below freezing at night.
