I would like to experiment with stealth urban vandwelling to see if it is something I want to do when I retire in a few years.

I looked at the web sites of major cargo van rental companies (U-Haul, Penske, Enterprise, Budget) and all charge per day and per mile. A five-day, 1000-mile trip will cost $1000 or more to rent a standard cargo van.

For $1,000 you can always buy a van and try.

I sold my complete dwelling set up including van for that in CoMo.

Personally, I would put the money into something that you could turn around and sell versus dumping money with no return.

You don't say how much "rental" money you have to spend. On other forums I frequent, many swear by kayak.com priceline.com or costco rentals. Cargo Vans specific makes the search a bit more challenging as passenger vans have a greater availability unless using the sources you indicated above.

Insurance, plates, inspections, personal property tax in Missouri.... I dunno

To determine if stealth is for you, rent something like a minivan, SUV, station wagon. Etc... Remove the seats and go try it.
Why does it have to be a cargo van? Think outside the box with alternatives.
Btw, fwiw, nobody really wants to stealth camp for fun or like, mostly due to cost and proximity to desired location. It's usually not pleasant, peaceful or fun.

Check out Enterprise. They rent full size cargo vans for $70 per day with Unlimited milage.
