I understand that I can charge the house battery from the alternator by use of solenoid, switch or isolator. But as a quick and easy, but not long term, solution what are the pitfalls of charging the battery directly from the cigarette lighter? Plug in a 12 volt connector that ends in positive/negative wires that are connected to the battery, providing current from the lighter to the battery. When the vehicle is not running, just unplug it from the lighter. Would that work? Could current reverse and go to the starting battery? Would that be a problem if it did? Assuming the house battery is grounded, would there be any grounding problem?

Thanks

It works. it however works poorly. Not much recharging current will flow and you could wind up blowing a lot of fuses when plugging in the depleted battery.

Improvements can be made by using thicker wire to the ciggy plug and receptacle, but if going that far, bypass the horrible inefficient toruble some connector completely, and your battery will also sigh with relief, as almost any other method chose of recharging will be superior to a ciggy plug stuck into the original vehicle receptacle.

Thanks. This makes sense now that I have read other posts by yourself and understand batteries a bit better.
